  • Recently, a video circulated online claiming that Islamist attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh persisted following the recent July Uprising. The video consists of two segments. While the video text implies that Islamists were attacking a shrine they considered blasphemous, the footage presents events in a different context. In another segment, an individual claims that a Qur’an inside a mosque was burned. Watch the video shared on X (formerly Twitter) here (Archive) and here (Archive). Fact Check Rumor Scanner’s investigation reveals that the video is not of any attack on Hindus. Instead, it depicts an incident at the Dargah of Khwaja Badaruddin Haidar, also known as Doza Pir, in Sherpur (Murshidpur Pir’s Dargah). Verification of the First Footage A reverse image search of keyframes from the video led to a Facebook post by H S Ripon on November 28, which featured a similar video (here). The caption states, “Sherpur Murshid Pir’s Dargah burning, attacked with fire and looting,” confirming the incident was an attack on the Murshidpur Pir’s Dargah. Verification of the Second Footage Similarly, another video (here) matching the footage was found on Chowdhury Tanveer’s Facebook profile, dated November 28. The caption states, “A mosque in Murshidpur Dargah of Sherpur was vandalized and looted by so-called religious Muslims. Why isn’t more outrage being voiced? Our faith condemns attacks on God’s house based on religious identity.” This confirms that the second video depicts the same Dargah attack. According to reports, an attack on Khwaja Badaruddin Haidar’s Dargah on November 28 occurred after a clash that resulted in an injury-related death. Earlier, on November 26, the Dargah had been attacked and set on fire. A report from Dhaka Post mentions that on November 29, miscreants cut down trees and looted various items from the Dargah’s premises. Some devotees and caretakers then set fire to at least ten vehicles before fleeing. Read the full report here. Thus, the incident at the Pir’s Dargah in Sherpur has been promoted as an attack on Hindus, which is misleading.
