India Today Fact Check
The 2020 video is from Libya and shows troops of the Government of National Accord firing at Libyan National Army soldiers.
On October 27, Israeli forces entered the Gaza Strip to begin what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called “the second stage of the war”. In its aftermath, a video of soldiers shooting at a car was shared by many online. In the video, the car can be seen overturning and exploding after being hit by bullets. One of its passengers thrown onto the streets attempting to escape was also shot at. Allegedly, the video showed Israeli soldiers under fire.
One X user shared the video and wrote, "These tanks, armoured vehicles and Israeli dogs ran away in fear. Indeed, ALLAH is sufficient for the Mujahideen and the Mujahideen are the true defenders of the Ummah." Other posts making similar claims can be seen here, here, and here.
India Today Fact Check's investigation, however, found that the video is from 2020 and is not related to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. It shows Government of National Accord soldiers firing at Libyan National Army troops.
Our Probe
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led to a news report containing similar images published by Arabic news outlet “Alhurra” on June 3, 2020. Per the report, the video was captured in Libya's capital Tripoli in 2020, and it showed an ambush set up by the forces of the Government of National Accord against the Libyan National Army under Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
We subsequently ran a keyword search on the internet and found many reports containing the same video and its screenshots published by websites like “Lenta.Ru”, “Piter TV”, and “Milliyet.com” around the same time. They too mentioned the same details.
Many international news outlets also reported at the time that the Government of National Accord military attacked the Khalifa Haftar-led Libyan National Army forces and captured the Tripoli city administrative area.
What is the Government of National Accord in Libya and who is Khalifa Haftar?
In December 2015, delegates from Libya’s rival factions signed the Libyan Political Agreement, a UN-brokered power-sharing agreement establishing a Government of National Accord, headed by a prime minister and a nine-member presidency council. Although the GNA received recognition from the UN Security Council, it struggled to consolidate its authority in both the eastern and western halves of the country.
Khalifa Haftar, a Libyan politician and an army general, formed the Libyan National Army to advance to the capital, Tripoli, where the UN-backed Government of National Accord was based.
Thus, it’s clear that a 2020 video from Libya was falsely shared in the context of the Israel-Hamas conflict
