  • FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show A Journalist Accusing Bill Gates Of Stealing Windows Software? A video shared on Instagram allegedly shows an interview in which Australian journalist Sarah Ferguson accuses Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates of not being the creator of Windows software. View this post on Instagram Verdict: False This video has been digitally altered. The original interview can be found on YouTube and does not feature the same dialogue. Fact Check: Gates recently warned of the looming threat of bioterrorism, predicting it to be the “next great global threat,” according to AS USA. Gates also believes AI to be the “most important” innovation, noting its potential in spaces like offices and classrooms, CNBC reported. A Facebook video allegedly shows Ferguson accusing Gates of stealing the idea for the operating system, Windows. The post shares an alleged video of Ferguson and Gates engaging in an interview. “The predecessor of Windows and its DOS was created by Gary Killdall, which you then basically stole from him for a couple of dollars,” Ferguson appears to say in the video. Although it’s true that Ferguson interviewed Gates recently, this video is digitally altered. The genuine video was posted to YouTube on Jan. 30 and is titled “Bill Gates complained to tech companies about ‘laughable’ COVID-19 conspiracy theories.” The dialogue in the original video does not match the footage shown in the Instagram video. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to corroborate Ferguson’s comments towards Gates. Check Your Fact has reached out to Ferguson and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received. (FACT CHECK: Did Bill Gates Withdraw From The World Economic Forum Summit?) This is not the first time misinformation about Bill Gates has gone viral. Check Your Fact previously debunked a claim that Gates turned off his Twitter comments after the platform’s CEO Elon Musk “exposed” him in the “Twitter Files.”
