  • Fact Check: Old photo of dead man is NOT from rally where Imran Khan was shot Following the assassination attempt on former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, many on social media shared a heartbreaking photo of a boy sitting beside a body. People claimed that the person in the image lost his life during the attack. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is an old photo that was shared by many in 2021, who claimed it was from Afghanistan. In an assassination attempt, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan was shot during a rally last Thursday at Wazirabad’s Allahwala Chowk. Reportedly, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief was hit by four bullets, and is now in a stable condition. One of his supporters was killed and many were injured during this attack. Following this, Pakistan saw PTI supporters protesting both online and offline. Amid this, many on social media shared a heartbreaking photo of a boy sitting beside a body. While sharing this photo, people claimed that the person in this image lost his life during the attack. The archived version of such a post can be seen here. Many shared the same photo with the same claim on Facebook as well. AFWA's investigation found the photo is not from Khan’s recent rally. This image has been on the internet for more than a year at least. AFWA PROBE Upon reverse-searching the photo, we found a social media post using the same photo on July 30, 2021. The image was shared with a caption: "Painful image Thousands of #Afghan kids have experienced this in their lifetime! Lost in the world of hopelessness and crying over the dead body of your father. If you don’t see our suffering and pain and what we have gone through in the last 4 decades, I doubt your humanity! Stop supporting terrorism in my country." On July 29, 2021, another person posted this image with the caption: "Tears of an Afghan child over the dead body of his father killed in Helmand province. Where are the human rights and children's rights organizations Or they are silent because Afghan lives don’t matter to them." IS THIS PHOTO FROM AFGHANISTAN'S HELMAND PROVINCE? We found two more similar posts on Twitter. A journalist named Fehim TaŞtekin shared this image on July 30, 2021, entitled "Baba ve oÄul! Helmand-Afghanistan." In that post, he tagged Bilal Sarwary, a journalist from BBC. Sarwary also posted this image claiming, "As children, we’re taught to honour our parents and as parents to protect our children - but this violence makes mourners out of us all. #AFGHANISTAN #Helmand." AFWA reached out to Sarwary to confirm how old the photo was and where it was shot. The story will be updated as and when we receive a response. Therefore, it is clear that this is an old photo that was falsely shared with the claim that it was from the recent attack on Khan's rally in Pakistan.
