  • Recently, in the midst of the current Palestine-Israel conflict, a video titled “Palestinians have taken over the Al-Aqsa Mosque” is being circulated. The video prominently features the ‘Dome of the Rock’ within the Al-Aqsa compound, easily recognizable by its golden dome. In this video, a chant of “Labbaik Al Aqsa, Labbaik” by a crowd is audible. Some viral Facebook posts with this claim can be found here (archive), here (archive), here (archive), and here (archive). Fact Check Investigations by the Rumor Scanner team found that the video under the title “Palestinians have taken over the Al-Aqsa Mosque” isn’t recent. Rather, it dates back to the previous April, specifically during Lailatul Qadr. It appears to have been recirculated with a new narrative. During the initial examination of the video, the Rumor Scanner team identified the inscription “fwaz tobasy” embedded within the video frame. With this clue, the Rumor Scanner team identified a corresponding Facebook account (archive). The said video (archive) was located on Fwaz Tobasy’s Facebook account, uploaded on April 18th, at 3:16 AM (BST). But the chant “Labbaik Al Aqsa, Labbaik” is absent from this video. It seems the chant was superimposed onto the video recently, likely to serve a specific narrative. Additionally, Fwaz uploaded another video (archive) at 3:24 AM (BST) the same day, displaying nighttime scenes of the Al-Aqsa compound. He shared further images and videos (archive) later that day. The Rumor Scanner’s findings highlight that Lailatul Qadr was commemorated in Palestine on April 17th. Similar visuals of the Al-Aqsa compound from around this period were also broadcasted by Al Jazeera, a Qatar-based news agency. This confirms that the images and videos shared by Fwaz Tobasy originated on April 17th. Furthermore, the assertion that “Palestinians have taken over the Al-Aqsa Mosque” is not accurate. Historically, the expansive Al-Aqsa compound was governed by Jordan until 1967 when Israel took control of Jerusalem and the West Bank. Today, while East Jerusalem is under Israeli jurisdiction, the Al-Aqsa or Temple Mount vicinity is overseen by a Jordanian-Palestinian Waqf entity. However, the Israeli security forces maintain the compound’s security. Bottom Line A video captured last April during Lailatul Qadr, depicting the ‘Dome of the Rock’ in the Al-Aqsa compound, is now being disseminated with a false context. Furthermore, the notion that “Palestinians have taken over the Al-Aqsa Mosque” is also false as its administration remains with a Jordanian-Palestinian Waqf body. So, the recirculated video from last April during Lailatul Qadr is being shared with a misrepresentative narrative; which is false.
