  • Fact Check: Old video of brawl FALSELY shared with made-up story about rape India Today Fact Check found that the video is more than two-years-old and unrelated to any rape case. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video dates back to February 17, 2021, and shows a man getting into a physical confrontation with a group of women because of a land dispute. A video of a brawl between a group of women and a man has been making the rounds on social media. The video begins with a man pushing another woman to the ground, followed by a group of women beating up the man with rocks and sticks. Those sharing the video on social media claimed that the man was caught raping a teenager regularly, which resulted in a confrontation with the villagers. "This man was repeatedly raping a teenager, then the women of the village gathered to give him a lesson in cookie therapy with palotherapy," claimed such posts shared on X and Facebook. Its archived version can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is more than two years old and shows a land dispute. Our Probe While scrolling down the replies to the X post, we noticed a that one user had pointed out that the video was old and the incident was from Himachal Pradesh. He also added that the fight broke out because of a land dispute. Taking a hint from this reply, we reverse-searched keyframes from the viral video with a few relevant keywords. The results led us to a report dated February 19, 2021, published on a website named "Himachal Abhi Abhi", featuring frames from the same clip. It stated that the incident occurred in the Sarwala village in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Subsequent searches took us to a News18 Hindi report from February 20, 2021, which carried the same visuals. Reportedly, a dispute over a road widening sparked the incident on February 17. According to the report, a road passing through Sarwala, which falls under the Dhanyara panchayat, was quite narrow in some places. So, members of Mahila Mandal in Dhanyara took the initiative and started widening the road. However, the owner of the land where the road was being widened was not happy with the decision and started a heated argument with the members of Mahila Mandal, which gradually turned into a physical confrontation between both the parties. Reportedly, both parties filed an FIR against each other. The extended version of this video can be seen below. Next, we reached out to the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, Nivedita Negi, who confirmed to India Today that the video had nothing to do with any rape incident as had been claimed. The sarpanch of Dhanyara panchayat, Kusma Kumari, also denied any other angle to this brawl and clarified that it was only about a land dispute. Thus, it’s clear that an old, unrelated video was shared with a false context. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
