  • Fact Check: Animated, AI-generated videos viral as visuals shot by Chandrayaan-3 One of the videos predates the ISRO lunar mission by years. The other was AI-generated. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check While the first video is an old 3D animation, the second one was created using AI. The Indian Space Research Organisation recently released photos of the far side of the moon taken by Chandrayaan-3. The images were captured on August 19 by the Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera. Reportedly, ISRO has already released three videos of the Moon captured by Chandrayaan-3. One of them was taken by the Lander Position Detection Camera on August 15. And even as many on social media shared these authentic Chandryaan-3 photos and videos, some shared CGI videos and AI-generated media as well, claiming that they were shot by the Indian lunar spacecraft. Let’s debunk a few of these. Video 1 One such spectacular video appears to show the surface of the moon with craters of various sizes and depths. The archived version of this post can be seen here. Using reverse search, we found that a grab from this video, laterally inverted, was posted on the stock photo website i-Stock on December 3, 2020. “Textured surface of the moon close-up in motion. 3d illustration. Elements of this image furnished by NASA,” read the photo’s description there. It was credited to “Flash Movie”. You can also find this video on the official website of Flash Movie, an online store which sells computer-generated videos and illustrations. The website’s social media accounts mention the creator as Andrey Maslov, an animator and CG artist. Video 2 Another viral video claimed to show what the Earth looked like from the Moon, as purportedly captured by Chandrayaan-3. The archived version of this post can be seen here. We noticed that the viral video was taken from a tweet shared by a person called Mithlesh Keshari, as made clear by the account’s name mentioned under the video. Keshari shared this video on August 20 and wrote, “Chandrayaan-3 Mission: Look how Earth looks from the Moon”. We noticed that in responses to his tweet, some pointed out that the video appeared to be animated. To this, Keshari replied that it was created using AI and was a small part of his documentary. We could not independently verify the origin of this video. However, it certainly doesn’t show the actual visuals of Earth from the Moon taken by Chandrayaan-3 as there is no information about it on the official website or Twitter account of ISRO.
