  • Last Updated on October 3, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A vintage advertisement is doing rounds on social media that claims that babies given cola drinks early in life gets a better start. The Ad is credited to Soda Pop Board. We fact checked and found that the advertisement image is fake and the claim that babies should be given cola is False. The Claim The claim comes in a vintage advertisement copy that says, “For a better start in life, start cola earlier.” The ad copy further reads that cola will promote personality, active lifestyle and give the body essential sugars. The copy of the ad creative is highly shared across all social media platforms and online platforms. It can be seen here, here, and here. A screenshot is also given below. Fact Check Is the Ad copy genuine? No. The Ad copy is fake. An online blogger who writes at thecitydesk.net has put up a blog post confessing that he had created this fake advertisement. The blogger mentioned that the creative was made in response to an online assignment put up by the website LiveJournal. The post at LiveJournal actually asked users to create an Ad creative using photoshop and the claims given in it. The post created during this assignment got viral on social media where people started taking it seriously. Just as the safety of cola consumption for babies raises concerns, so too does the question of alcohol intake during breastfeeding, emphasizing the importance of careful dietary choices for new parents. The advert has been declared fake in multiple books written about the colas. One such book written about the history of soda by Prof. Marion Nestle from New York University explains the Soda Pop Board, the claimed advertiser of the advertisement, is a fictitious organisation. Is Cola good for babies? No. Colas are sugary drinks and not good for babies or adolescents. Studies have shown that, ‘soft drink consumption can contribute to detrimental oral and general health.’
