  • A compilation of videos showing alleged atrocities against the Hindu community in Bangladesh has gone viral on social media platforms. There are also clips of a man reciting a poem for the community in the background. After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in the country, many reports emerged about the attacks on the minority community of Hindus in Bangladesh. Attacks in the form of vandalism of Hindus-owned shops and temples were common. In November, around 30,000 Hindus protested in Chattogram, chanting slogans demanding their rights while police and soldiers guarded the area, reported The Hindu. (Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.) We received a query about this on our WhatsApp tipline number, as well. Is the claim true?: The claim is misleading. Six of the clips in the viral video are false or are shared with missing information and do not show violence against Hindus, as claimed. What we found: At first, we tracked the source of the video. It was uploaded by an Instagram user Pawas Singh Sengar on 10 December. The user mentioned his name at the end of the viral video. We divided the viral video into multiple keyframes and ran a Google reverse image search on them. Here's what we found: VIDEO 1: The first clip shows a massive fire with a text stating, "Burning of Hindu shops." However, this video is an incident of a fire at a local market in Lakshmipur. Close to 15 shops of hardware, plastic and cloth items caught the fire, reported BD Bulletin and Shomoy Sangbad. None of the news reports mentioned a communal angle or any attack that took place on a particular communities livelihood. VIDEO 2: The second clip of which we were able to find the context was the which showed a body, suspended from a bridge. The reverse image search led us to a Facebook post by Md Abul Hasan from 6 August who noted, "Police of Savar Ashulia police station have been killed and hanged under the over bridge." (translated from Bangla to English). We came across two other Facebook posts stating the same. You can find those here and here. We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and came across reports which mentioned the killing of police personnel in Ashulia. Reports by Rupali Bangladesh and Ajker Patrika from 22 August stated, "They hung the body of the deceased policeman Raju Ahmed from the footover bridge on the Dhaka-Aricha highway adjacent to the police station." The deceased police personnel belonged to the Muslim community. A case had been registered against 150 individuals by the police. VIDEO 3: We checked this visual showing people allegedly abducting a Hindu girl. The Quint reported about this video in August and noted that a woman's spouse attempted to kidnap her with the assistance of a crowd in Noakhali. The pair had split up, and the woman resided at her father's house. We spoke to a journalist from Bangladesh who clarified that the claim was fake and the woman and her husband belonged to the Hindu community. VIDEO 4: A post by Bangladeshi fact-checker Shohanur Rahman stated, "In August, 4-year-old Apurba and a 16-day-old infant were killed in Gopalganj. The incident was baselessly communalized, though locals and police suspected prior enmity." We ran a keyword search in Bangla and came across news reports from Rising BD and Amar Sangbad. They mentioned that two deceased bodies of Apurba (4) and Arnab, a sixteen days old infant were recovered from Gazariapara village and a pond in Tarail village, respectively. A report by Daily Observer noted the police's comments that the incident took place due to past hostilities. None of the reports mentioned a communal motivation behind the deaths of the two children. VIDEO 5: We checked this clip showing a woman profusely crying while being tied up. The Quint reported in August that this video did not have a communal angle to it. It showed student protesters at the Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls' College, tying up members of the Chhatra League. The video showed quota reform demonstrators restraining the college's Chhatra League members, who faced multiple accusations of assault and harassment directed at regular students. VIDEO 6: According to a post by Rahman, BBC Verify investigated this video and found that the incident was about a prior land dispute. BBC's report noted that the original video about this incident was uploaded on 6 August. We found an eight-minute long video showing this woman, crying, on Facebook which was also uploaded on 6 August. The report stated a group of local students who helped the woman protect her property informed them that the conflict was regarding a completely different issue. They provided the BBC with photos and videos of the clean-up that depict the property as it appeared in the initial video. The temple located on the property remained intact. The news outlet also mentioned that the dispute concerned with the possession of land. Locals also informed them that the attack wasn’t driven by religious motives. They also noted that other Hindu families and temples nearby were not impacted. While there are several individual reports about attacks on Hindu minority community in Bangladesh, some of the visuals used in the compilation do not show real incidents of attacks against the minority community. Conclusion: In the two-minute video, we found six instances of misinformation which did not show attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh. (Editor's Note: The story has been updated to include reports about attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.) (Not convinced of a post or information you came across online and want it verified?
