  • Fact Check: Convoy heading towards Texas for border control? No, this video is from 2022 Amid the intensified situation in the US over border security, an old and unrelated video was shared falsely as a recent development. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from March 2022 and shows a protest called “People's Convoy”, whose participants were demanding the withdrawal of Covid-19 restrictions. Tensions at the US-Mexico border escalated following a Supreme Court ruling favouring the Joe Biden administration's decision to cut razor wire to control migrant movement. A standoff emerged as Texas Governor Greg Abbott insisted on adding more wires, leading to a confrontation between federal authorities and the Texas National Guard. Amid this, a video of a convoy of trucks on a freeway accompanied by people waving American flags began making rounds on social media. Allegedly, the video showed Americans heading towards the Texas border to stop illegal immigration. "Wow, Well done, Americans have had enough unity against the illegal immigrants! Patriots, farmers, truckers and more, are all heading to the Southern border to assist the Texas Armed Guard against the continued Invasion of America. They have finally realised the Biden administration is actively working against the country," proclaimed such posts shared on X and Facebook. The archive of such a post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is nearly two years old and unrelated to the proceedings in Texas by any means. Our Probe Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video led us to a report from Business Insider published on March 21, 2022. The article that featured screenshots from the video in question was about a cyclist who impeded a truck convoy in Washington DC, causing it to move at a snail's pace. Reportedly, the convoy drove from Adelanto, California, to Washington DC, to protest against pandemic restrictions. Taking a clue from that, an advanced search with relevant keywords led us to news reports from The Guardian and India Today. Published in March 2022, these reports mentioned that the “People's Convoy” was organised in the US capital with thousands of trucks and recreational vehicles with a demand to end all the Covid-19 restrictions. We also found the extended version of the video uploaded to the official YouTube channel of Insider News on March 4, 2022, making it evident that the video is unrelated to the recent developments along the Texas border. The description of the video reads, "A convoy of truck drivers is making its way from Adelanto, California all the way to the US capitol to express outrage over Covid restrictions. Huge crowds of supporters are cheering them on along the way." Therefore, it is clear that a nearly two-year-old video was falsely shared as a recent protest by Americans against the migrant movement at the US-Mexico border.
