  • Last Updated on February 27, 2025 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A social media post claims that drinking water mixed with ghee and black pepper can cure piles in 10 days. We fact checked and found the claim to be False. The Claim We received an instagram post via our WhatsApp tip line at +91-85078 85079 that suggests drinking a mixture of ghee and black pepper in water daily can completely cure piles (haemorrhoids) within 10 days. Fact Check Can ghee and black pepper in water cure piles? No, they cannot cure piles. There is no scientific or medical proof that ghee and black pepper, when mixed in water, can completely cure piles. Piles occur due to swollen veins in the rectum or anus, often caused by chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, excessive straining during bowel movements, or pregnancy. A cure involves reducing pressure on these veins, improving digestion, and healing inflamed tissues—something that requires more than just one home remedy. While ghee and black pepper might provide some digestive support, they are not a medically recognised treatment for piles. Moreover, piles can range in severity. Mild cases might resolve with dietary and lifestyle changes, while more severe cases require medical treatment. Relying solely on ghee and black pepper could delay proper treatment, leading to complications like persistent bleeding, thrombosis, or infections. Dietician Kamna Chauhan states, “Diet alone cannot cure piles, but it can help manage the symptoms. Consuming fibre-rich foods can soften stools and make them easier to pass, reducing discomfort. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids further supports the effectiveness of fibre in easing bowel movements.” On a related note, another home remedy claims that a simple salt water remedy can cure piles in 3 days. But this is completely false. Does ghee help with piles at all? It may provide some relief but does not treat the condition. Ghee is known for its lubricating properties and can help soften stools when consumed with warm milk or fibre-rich foods. This may reduce straining during bowel movements, which can prevent worsening of haemorrhoids. Additionally, ghee contains butyrate, a fatty acid that may support gut health and reduce inflammation in the digestive tract. However, ghee alone does not shrink swollen veins, stop bleeding, or heal anal fissures caused by piles. It is not a cure but may provide some relief when combined with other dietary measures. Dr Mohit Sandhu, an Ayurveda Consultant and Kshar Sutra expert from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, stated, “Ghee is beneficial for health, but the belief that it can cure piles in 10 days is a myth. The treatment and recovery duration depend on the grade of piles. As a Kshar Sutra expert, I believe this surgical treatment is the best option for individuals suffering from piles.” Can black pepper improve digestion and ease piles symptoms? No. It may help in digestion but does not directly cure piles. Dr Muskan Thakur, BAMS, Ayurveda Consultant from Indore, says, “Black pepper contains piperine, a compound that can stimulate digestive enzymes and improve nutrient absorption. This can enhance digestion and potentially prevent constipation, a major contributing factor to piles. However, consuming too much black pepper can irritate the digestive tract and even worsen symptoms in people with sensitive stomachs, leading to discomfort, acidity, or bloating. While good digestion is important for preventing constipation, black pepper is not a cure for haemorrhoids.” What actually helps in managing piles? A high-fibre diet, hydration, and lifestyle changes. To manage and prevent piles effectively, focus on: Eating more fibre – Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes soften stools and promote regular bowel movements. - Drinking plenty of water – Staying hydrated helps prevent constipation and keeps stools soft. - Avoiding prolonged sitting – Sitting for too long, especially on hard surfaces, increases pressure on rectal veins and worsens haemorrhoids. - Using a sitz bath – Soaking in warm water for 15–20 minutes several times a day can relieve pain and inflammation. - Seeking medical treatment – Severe cases may require professional interventions such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or surgery. - Dr Almas Fatma, MBBS, a General Physician from Navi Mumbai, states: “Natural remedies like warm baths, aloe vera, and dietary changes can ease mild piles but cannot treat severe cases like grade 4 piles. When haemorrhoids are prolapsed and cannot be pushed back, medical or surgical treatments like rubber band ligation or hemorrhoidectomy are essential. Natural remedies may provide relief but cannot replace advanced treatments.” Conclusion The idea that ghee and black pepper in water can cure piles in 10 days is a myth. While these ingredients may support digestion and stool softening, they are not a stand-alone remedy for haemorrhoids. If you suffer from piles, prioritise dietary and lifestyle changes, and seek medical advice for proper treatment. Don’t fall for quick-fix remedies that lack scientific backing—proper management is key to relief and recovery.
