  • Fact Check: Shlokas at Queen's funeral? 2009 video of CWG Queen's Baton Relay viral with false claims Despite the fact that the state funeral is scheduled to take place on September 19 at the Westminster Abbey, those sharing the video claimed that these shlokas being performed were from the Queen's funeral Listen to Story India Today Fact Check Elizabeth II’s funeral will take place on September 19. This video is from October 2009 and shows the recitation of Sanskrit shlokas by the St James School Choir group at Buckingham Palace during the Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010 Queen’s Baton Relay. Britain’s longest-serving monarch Queen Elizabeth II passed away aged 96 in Scotland's Balmoral castle on September 8. Following her demise, Charles was proclaimed as the new King at St James's Palace in the City of London on Saturday. Following the funeral, she will be laid to rest alongside her parents, sister and husband in the King George VI memorial chapel in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. While the United Kingdom is preparing to bid farewell to the popular monarch, a video of school children reciting Sanskrit shlokas has started making rounds on social media. Despite the fact that the state funeral is scheduled to take place on September 19 at the Westminster Abbey, those sharing the video claimed that these shlokas being performed were from the Queen's funeral. An Archived version of this post can be seen here. If Elizabeth II’s funeral is yet to take place, then where is this video from? AFWA's investigation found that it was shot in 2009. And therefore, unrelated to the funeral. WHERE'S THE VIDEO FROM? Around the 25-second mark of the viral video, we were able to spot the logo of Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010 on signage. Also, the watermark “www.wildflimsindia.com” was clearly visible in the video. Subsequent refined searches led us to the longer version of the same video on the YouTube channel of Wild Films India, an archive of videos and photos from South Asia. The video was titled, "Students of St James School Choir recite shlokas at Buckingham Palace." We also found a YouTube video of the event uploaded by the Australian news outlet ABC News in October 2009 with a description that reads, "Indian President Pratibha Patil and Britain's Queen Elizabeth II have launched the baton relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games." Further searches led us to a photo of Queen Elizabeth II handing over the baton to then President of India, Pratibha Patil in a CNN report. We also found the same photograph on the stock media website Getty Images that said the event was held on October 29, 2009. It is thus clear that the video making the rounds has nothing to do with the British monarch’s funeral.
