India Today Fact Check
The video is not from West Bengal, but from Mandvi Bazar of Vadodara, Gujarat. It was shot on March 30, 2023.
Sporadic unrest and violence during Ram Navami has become a norm in the last few years. Like many other parts of the country, stone pelting and arson were reported in Howrah, West Bengal, on March 30. Consequently, section 144 was imposed and a few delinquents were arrested.
In the backdrop of the recent communal clashes, a video of a mob pelting stones has gone viral on social media. The video supposedly shot from a moving car, shows a frenzied crowd on a street alongside DJ speakers loaded on another vehicle. In this video, some youths had their faces covered with handkerchiefs.
While sharing this clip, some Twitter users claimed that the video is from the Howrah district of West Bengal and was shot during the Ram Navami procession. Many even criticised the law and order situation in West Bengal under the Mamata Banerjee-led government.

AFWA PROBE
While going through the replies, we noticed some users pointed out that the video is from Gujarat, and not Bengal.
Around the 13-second timestamp of the video, signage of a shop named “Paramount Parfums” can be seen.
Taking a clue from this, we searched for “Paramount Parfums” in Google Maps and came across a shop with the same name in the Mandvi Bazar area of Vadodara, Gujarat.
When we compared the 360-degree street view of the area, the signage of the said shop and the design of the gateway in the middle of the road matched the visuals of the viral video. By now it’s evident that the video is indeed from Vadodara, Gujarat.
To know how and when the violence broke out, we ran some keywords in different languages. The search results led us to a Jansatta report from April 1, 2023.
The report collated multiple incidents of violence from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal. It featured the stills from the same affected area of Vadodara.
AFWA reached out to Abdul Hamid, owner of the “Paramount Parfums” to get more details about the video. Hamid confirmed the authenticity of the video and said, "It was during the afternoon of March 30 when the procession of Ram Navami was carried out. We had our shops closed since it's the month of Ramzaan. Stone pelting happened right outside our shop."
Clearly, a video from the Mandvi Bazar of Vadodara was falsely linked to Howrah, West Bengal.
