In India, a Devadasi is a female artist dedicated to worshipping and serving a deity or a temple for the rest of her life. They are devoted to God and are regarded as God’s wives, hence they are not allowed to marry any other person. In 1988, the system was made illegal. Even after the Supreme Court abolished the system. There are reports that a few states still follow the Devadasi practice. Meanwhile, a video showing a man and a woman in traditional south Indian attire adorned with garlands is in circulation with the claim that it shows the practice of Devadasi in the southern states. The video is in circulation is shared with a caption in Hindi “1950 तक ये प्रथा थी भारत में, लोग कहते हैँ दक्षिणी भारत में आज भी है! देख कर लग रहा कितना शोषण रहा होगा महिलाओं का, सुना है दलित महिलाओं को ही बनाया जाता था!” When translated, it claims: “This practice was prevalent in India till 1950; people say it is still prevalent in Southern India! Seeing this the exploitation women must have faced could be gauged. There is buzz that only Dalit women were put into such practice!” Here is the archive link for the claim. Fact Check: The claim is False. The video does not show the practice of the Devadasi system. It shows the marriage of Malayali actress Divya Sreedhar. When we extracted the keyframes from the video and checked using a Google reverse image search, we found that this video shows the marriage of Divya Sreedhar and Kris Venugopal in Guruvayoor in October 2024. According to Onmanorama, Television actors Kris Venugopal and Divya Sreedhar got married at a private function in Guruvayoor. The duo worked together in the serial 'Patharamattu' following which they proceeded with the marriage plans. Times of India article also shared images of the event stating that Divya Sreedhar is a talented actress celebrated for her roles in various television projects. For Divya, this marriage represents a second chance at love. She has two children from her previous marriage and took her time to discuss the decision with them before moving forward. Here is the video of the couple’s marriage published by a YouTube channel named Celespot Media, on October 30, 2024, with the title “Patharamattu Moorthi Sir & Divya Sreedhar Wedding | Kriss Venugopal and Divya Sreedharl Wedding” Therefore, the viral video does not show the practice of Devadasi culture in South India, it is a video of the second marriage of Malayali actress Divya Sreedhar in October 2024. The claim is False.
