  • Last Updated on August 5, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims oil pulling with clove and coconut oil can reverse tooth decay. We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim An Instagram reel shares the video of a woman with the title “How to Reverse Tooth Decay” with the video of using clove and coconut oil for oil pulling. Fact Check What is oil pulling? Oil pulling is a practice described in Ayurveda as holding a sufficient amount of medicinal oil in the mouth and then discarding it once it becomes thin and milky white without swallowing it. The primary method for oil pulling is mechanical shear forces. This method is believed to have advantages for both dental and overall wellness and is said to help with a range of ailments, including migraines, headaches, diabetes, asthma, acne, and even tooth whitening. The practice is thought to help remove impurities from the body, and herbal oils such as sesame, coconut, and sunflower oils have been proposed as effective options. Can oil pulling with clove and coconut oil reverse tooth decay? Not exactly. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that oil pulling with clove and coconut oil can reverse tooth decay. Clove oil is a natural remedy that has been traditionally used for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Some people use clove oil to alleviate tooth pain and as an antiseptic for the mouth due to its powerful antioxidant properties. Coconut oil is another natural remedy that has been used for oil pulling to improve oral health. Proponents of using clove and coconut oil for oil pulling claim that they can reverse tooth decay by reducing harmful bacteria and promoting oral health. However, while clove and coconut oil may have some beneficial properties for oral health, they cannot reverse tooth decay that has already occurred. Tooth decay is irreversible. This is because dental decay represents the damaged organic portions of the teeth. Although enamel remineralization occurs early on, it cannot be reversed once bacterial infiltration reaches the deeper layers. Dr. Pooja Bhardwaj, B.D.S. further elaborates on this by stating that, “Clove has antiseptic agent called eugenol, which reduces bacterial activities and combats decay. On the other hand coconut oil doesn’t have any of such properties. Pulling of clove and coconut oil might reduces bacterial activities, gingivitis (gum swelling) and fights halitosis, still there are no scientific backing that supports for caries reversal. Moreover, it has unpleasant taste which is tough to get rid off. It makes tooth surface slimy which adheres more food debris, thus promoting cavity. Hence, one should always consult a dentist before experimenting such home remedies as they can lead to more harm than good.” The best way to prevent and reverse tooth decay is to practice good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing regularly, limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks, and visiting the dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings. If you have signs of tooth decay, such as cavities or tooth pain, it’s essential to see a dentist as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your teeth. Another post shared that the bacteria that causes tooth decay can be killed by eating cashew nuts which are actually seeds.
