  • Fact Check: Palestinian mom recovers kid's toy in Gaza? No, this is from Syria India Today found that the photo is old and not related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This picture was taken by Iranian photographer Hassan Ghaedi in Homs, Syria in 2016. As the Israel-Hamas conflict continues, thousands of disturbing images and videos of destroyed houses, injured children, and more in Gaza have been shared online. Among them is a poignant photo, allegedly of a Palestinian mother retrieving her child's toy car from their destroyed house in Gaza. The photograph shows a woman descending the staircase of a dilapidated structure, clutching a toy car in one hand. One such post shared on X by American political commentator Jackson Hinkle reads, “You CANNOT BREAK the Palestinian spirit.” India Today found that the photo in question is old and not from Gaza. Our Probe A reverse search of the viral image led us to the same photograph published on the website of the "Siena International Photo Awards," an annual photography competition held by the non-profit association Art Photo Travel. According to its website, the photograph won the title of “Remarkable Artwork” in 2020 under the category “Documentary & Photojournalism”. The description of the photograph titled “Mother” states that it was taken in Homs, Syria. “Homs, Syria's third-largest city, had been involved in war for four years. A mother, who returned home after the end of the conflict, found her child's toy car in their destroyed house,” read the description of the photo. As per the website, the photo was captured by Hassan Ghaedi, a freelance photographer from Iran. India Today reached out to Ghaedi, who confirmed that the photo was shot by him in Homs in 2016. We also found that Ghaedi shared the same photo on his Instagram account in February 2020. The caption to the photo reads, “Life in war. The #mother, who returned home after the end of the conflict and has found her child’ toys. #Homs #Syria. On June 2016.” The photo was also featured in multiple reports on the winners of 2020 Siena International Photo Awards. It is hence clear that the photograph in question is old and from Syria. It has no connection to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
