  • Fact Check: NOT Sonam Kapoor's performance at King Charles' coronation — this video is from 2019 Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor Ahuja has been invited to the coronation ceremony of King Charles III. But does this viral video show her performance there? Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from March 2019, when the actor took part in a fashion show in Mumbai. Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor Ahuja has been invited to the coronation ceremony of King Charles III. Reportedly, the “Delhi 6” actor will be the only Indian celebrity to perform at the Coronation Concert alongside Hollywood celebrities like Tom Cruise, and they, along with others such as Joan Collins, Tom Jones, Bear Grylls, and Oti Mabuse, will participate in pre-recorded video segments. Following this announcement, many shared a video of Ahuja walking down a ramp donning an Indian outfit with “God Save The King”, the national anthem of the United Kingdom, playing in the background. Some social media users shared this 45-second-long clip with sarcastic captions that read, "Sonam Kapoor ‘performing’ at the Coronation Ceremony of King Charles. This is how we take revenge on Brits." Others claimed this showed Ahuja’s performance at the coronation concert. Archived versions of such posts can be seen here and here. India Today’s investigation, however, found that the video is almost four-years-old and unrelated to King Charles' coronation. Our Probe We reverse-searched keyframes from the viral video and came across a Rediff report from March 26, 2019, which featured Ahuja wearing the same attire. Per the report, fashion designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla organised a fashion show in Mumbai, paying tribute to Indian textiles and embroidery. Celebrities like Karan Johar and Shweta Nanda Bachchan also featured in it alongside Ahuja. The Indian Express noted that Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla shared the pictures of this show on their Instagram handle and wrote, “Inheritance, An Ode to the Textiles and Embroideries of India." Upon comparing Ahuja’s outfit and the earrings from the viral video with the ones in news reports, it became clear that the video is from the aforementioned show. We also found reports and YouTube videos that mentioned Ahuja danced to “Ghar More Pardesiya”, a song from the Hindi movie “Kalank”, during the event. This made it clear that “God Save The King” was later added to the viral clip. A complete video of this show was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of Viral Bollywood. It can be seen below. Moreover, the coronation ceremony of King Charles III will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6, followed by a concert on May 7. According to reports, the Bollywood actor will perform spoken word at the concert. Reports add that the exact details of her performance have not been revealed yet, but sources claim that it is expected to be something around the British Royal Family. Thus, it is safe to conclude that the video of Sonam Kapoor Ahuja is from March 2019, and unrelated to the coronation ceremony.
