The incident happened in 2020 during the NDA rule in the state.
The hooch tragedy in Bihar that killed almost 70 people has created political turmoil in the state. Amid this, many shared a violent video on social media that shows a policeman being beaten up by a group of people. Those sharing the video on Twitter claimed, "Liquor mafias thrashed the policemen. How did the Mahagathbandhan government make this Bihar?" On December 28, 2022, the same video was shared by the Bihar BJP’s Twitter account. AFWA's investigation found the video was old. In September 2020, a Bihar policeman was assaulted, allegedly by liquor mafia goons. Locals secretly recorded this on video.
AFWA Probe
A reverse search of a keyframe of the viral video led us to the various news reports which contained the same video. On September 6, 2020, the viral video was shared by Zee News in a news report. On September 8, 2020, the same video was also shared by the Navbharat Times. Per the reports, on September 5, 2020, a group of liquor mafia goons allegedly attacked ASI Ashutosh Kumar of the Jakkanpur police station in Patna.
AFWA contacted Rajesh Kumar Jha, India Today's Correspondent from Patna to get more information about the viral clip. Jha confirmed that the incident happened in Patna in 2020 as described in news reports. He also added that after the incident, the police arrested several suspects. On September 6, 2020, the viral video was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of News18 Bihar Jharkhand with the same information.
Per a news report, in 2017, Nitish Kumar ended his alliance with Mahagathbandhan and returned to the NDA. He became Chief Minister of Bihar for the sixth time with the support of the BJP. In the 2020 Assembly Election, Nitish Kumar retained his place as CM of Bihar for the seventh time. In August 2022, he returned to the Mahagathbandhan. So, when this incident happened, Bihar’s was being governed by the NDA.
