  • A video of a watch restoration is going viral on social media. It shows the broken watch being repaired and the result shows the watch as good as new. The video alleges that the watch in question is an 1853 watch by Tissot. Servicing a Tissot watch after 167 years, made in 1853. Mesmerising.. pic.twitter.com/irpT3IwfKw — Shilpa (@shilpa_cn) June 19, 2021 The claim on WhatsApp that is going viral with the video reads: TISSOT watch made in 1853 repaired after 170 years. A wonderful experience to watch it getting repaired and made as good as new ! Digiteye India received a request to fact-check this viral video on WhatsApp. FACT CHECK The Digiteye India team broke the video into multiple keyframes and ran a Reverse Image Search on Google. The results showed that multiple people have shared this video with the same claim. Some of these reshares date back to May 2023. Towards the end of the video, you can see the restored watch. We took that keyframe and ran a Reverse Image Search. The results revealed that the watch is from Tissot’s T-Classic Le Locle collection. We went to Tissot’s official website to find out more about it. The watch is a Tissot Le Locle Powermatic 80. It is a part of the Tissot T-Classic collection and is known for its Powermatic 80 movement, which offers an impressive 80 hours of power reserve. When we looked around further, we found out that Tissot’s Le Locle collection was originally launched in 2003 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the brand. This website has an article that mentions, “The Le Locle collection is one of the brand’s best-sellers. A tribute to the birthplace of the brand, it has traditionally made cases and dials that reflect the aesthetics of the clock face of the Le Locle church. As Tissot’s flagship line, it conveys traditional know-how, timeless aesthetics and a certain idea of good taste.” Tissot is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world. Based in the Swiss city of Le Locle, the brand has been making watches since 1853. The claim is, hence, false. CLAIM: A viral video shows the restoration of an 1853 watch by Tissot. CONCLUSION: The watch in the video is not from 1853. It is a Tissot Le Locle Powermatic 80. The Le Locle collection was originally launched in 2003 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the brand.
