A purported newspaper clipping which talked about the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) attacking a zoo after they served non-vegetarian food to tigers on Maha Shivratri is going viral on social media platforms.
An X (formerly Twitter) user shared the clipping with a caption saying, "Just release the Tigers in front of these Goons, no need to serve Non-veg."
What is the truth?: The viral post was originally shared as a satire by an Instagram page named 'The Savala Vada', which regularly posts such satirical and parody content.
Hints in the viral image: We took a closer look at the viral image and found that it carried text that said "This Might Be Satire". This indicated the possibility of the information being satirical.
Finding the original post: On searching for the headline on Google, we came across an Instagram handle called 'The Savala Vada'. The post was uploaded on 28 February.
The second slide carried another satirical post which said that the South Asian University was renamed to 'University of Akhand Bharat'.
About the Instagram page: Team WebQoof checked the handle's bio, which clearly identified itself as "satire/parody". This further made it clear that the account shares satirical content regularly.
What's the context?: As per a report published by The Indian Express, an altercation had broken out between two student groups at the South Asian University in New Delhi.
The incident allegedly took place over non-vegetarian food being served at the mess on the occasion of Maha Shivratri.
The report further said that the ABVP were responsible for the clash, as per the allegations of several students at the university.
Conclusion: It is evident that the news clipping about ABVP attacking zoo for serving non-vegetarian food on Maha Shivratri is satire.
