  • FACT CHECK: Did CBC Publish An Article Claiming Liberals Proposed Fines for Making Eye Contact With Elected Officials? An image shared on Facebook allegedly shows a screenshot of a CBC News article claiming liberals have proposed $5,000 fines for those making eye contact with elected officials. Verdict: False The image is digitally altered. A CBC spokesperson confirmed in an email to Check Your Fact that CBC did not publish this article. Fact Check: Canada’s Liberal Party has begun a retreat in Vancouver that seeks to address the government’s playbook on cost of living and the economy, according to CBC. The Facebook image appears to show an article from CBC News with a headline that reads, “Liberals propose five thousand dollar fines for making eye contact with elected and appointed officials.” The photo was also posted on Twitter, where it garnered over 600 retweets. This image is digitally fabricated. The article cannot be found through a search of CBC’s website or any of its verified social media accounts. Likewise, there are no credible news reports showing that this is a genuine headline from CBC or any other media outlet. (RELATED: Did CBC News Publish An Article On Media Trust Being At An All-Time High?) “We can confirm that CBC did not publish this article,” a CBC spokesperson said in an email to Check Your Fact. “We are aware of a number of recently posted images of fake stories attributed to CBC News and are working with Social Media providers to flag and remove these false and inflammatory manipulated images.” This is not the first time a fabricated CBC article has spread online. Check Your Fact recently debunked an image allegedly featuring a CBC article that claimed 44% of pregnant women in a Pfizer vaccine trial had miscarried.
