  • FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show A Man Smashing A Pie Into The Face Of An Airline CEO For Mandating COVID-19 Vaccines? A video shared on Facebook purportedly shows a man smashing a pie into the face of an airline CEO for requiring mandatory vaccinations. Verdict: False The video is from 2017 and is unrelated to COVID-19 vaccines. Fact Check: The 20-second video shows a man speaking at a podium when suddenly another man emerges behind him and smashes a pie into his face before quickly moving out of the camera shot. The post’s caption reads: “AIRLINE CEO PIE IN FACE TRYING TO FORCE VAAAAXCEENS.” The video, however, is unrelated to COVID-19 vaccines. Through a reverse image search of key frames, Check Your Fact found similar footage in a May 2017 article published by The Irish Times. The outlet identified the man hit with the pie as Qantas Airways CEO Alan Joyce, who was giving a speech in Perth, Australia, when he was hit. The man who hit Joyce with the pie was identified as Tony Overheu, who was later charged with giving police false details, NBC News reported. Overheu told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. (ABC) that he was opposed to Qantas’ campaign in support of same-sex marriage and wanted to make a statement. “From my reading, it would appear that Alan Joyce is very much part of a network trying to subvert the federal parliamentary process around the issue of marriage equality,” Overheu told ABC. (RELATED: No, Australia’s Prime Minister Did Not Fake Getting The COVID-19 Vaccine) While Joyce has previously voiced intent of requiring mandatory vaccines for international passengers flying with Qantas, the company has yet to institute any such policy, according to its website. Rather, Qantas is encouraging passengers to voluntarily get vaccinated through an incentive program, according to traveller.com
