| - While Emhoff appears to have acknowledged the affair in a statement on the day the story broke, his language was vague, and neither he nor his spokespeople have confirmed any of the details as of this writing, including whether the woman was a nanny to his daughter, Ella Emhoff.
In August 2024, as U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, a rumor started to spread that her husband, Doug Emhoff, cheated on his first wife with a nanny, getting her pregnant (archived):
This post on X had more than 1.4 million views and 11,000 likes, as of this writing. It appeared several times on X as well as on other platforms, including Reddit, Facebook and TikTok. Some versions of the claim included the detail that Emhoff had paid off the woman, suggesting he, too, had given away "hush money" — as former President Donald Trump did with adult film star Stormy Daniels (archived):
Other posts alleged that Emhoff's first marriage ended after his then-wife, Kerstin Emhoff, found out about the affair.
Snopes has contacted the Harris campaign to ask for confirmation of details and will update this article if we receive a response.
On Aug. 3, 2024, Emhoff sent CNN a statement that appeared to acknowledge the affair during his first marriage after The Daily Mail published an article about it. He did not go into details:
During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions. I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side.
CBS News attempted to confirm the story independently. However, the details of the affair differ between its report and The Daily Mail's. While The Daily Mail said the woman did not keep the baby, CBS News quoted unnamed sources saying she'd had a miscarriage. While The Daily Mail reported that the affair ended the Emhoffs' marriage, CBS News' sources said the couple were separated at the time it took place. The Daily Mail added that the woman was Emhoff's daughter's nanny, a fact CBS News contradicted, saying she was a teacher at his children's school — but not one of their teachers. The Daily Mail added that the woman and Emhoff financially settled the issue, a detail CBS News did not mention.
Snopes has not yet been able to independently confirm the claims. We reached out to both news outlets to ask about their reporting on the story and will update this report if they respond.
