The railway gateman was not involved at all. A video of a mob assaulting a man allegedly on a railway line in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, was widely shared on social media. People in the video could be seen lashing belt blows at a man. “Hardoi, UP: Railway Gateman beaten by suspected Muslim Jihadis. They also proudly uploaded the attack video on social media,” read one such tweet sharing the video. India Today found that the video is from the Mahmudpur Saraiya village in Pihani Kotwali in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, and the violence was caused by villagers after an accident. The railway gateman was not involved in this. Our Probe Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video led us to news reports featuring screenshots from the viral video. According to a report published in UP Tak on August 13, the assault took place on the railway track in Hardoi's Pihani neighbourhood on August 11. Per the report, Saba Haider, a resident of Mahmudpur, accidentally hit a woman named Parveen from the Saraiya village and fled the scene, abandoning his bike. However, when he arrived at his residence, Parveen's family was present there and assaulted him. Individuals from both parties intervened. Saba Haider headed to his shop after some time. Parveen's relatives followed him and thrashed him again near the railway crossing 21D-2E. Someone recorded the brawl and shared it on social media. According to ASP Hardoi, Durgesh Singh, the clash was over an accident in the Pihani police station area. Six people have been charged in this matter by the police. In response to a tweet alleging that Muslims were beating the gateman, Hardoi police tweeted that the allegation of attacking the gateman was baseless and false. The Divisional Railway Manager of Moradabad also tweeted from the official Twitter account and said that this was a personal matter and the railway gateman was not involved at all. “This incident happened yesterday at LC 21/D bet JKH-JBG, Major section RAC-SPC. Outsiders were quarrelling themselves and come to the railway track during their personal issues. There is no any involvement of gateman and the gateman performed his duty safely,” tweeted DRM Moradabad NR. Thus, it’s abundantly clear that the viral video did not show the Railway gateman being beaten up by Muslims.
