  • Last Updated on May 20, 2022 by Team THIP Quick Take A video shared on social media claims that Lyme disease was intentionally invented in a lab on Plum Island in the 1970s. We fact checked and found the claim to be False. The Claim A Facebook post claims, “Was Lyme disease a man-made virus? If you’re into conspiracy theories, this one’s pretty interesting. And to understand this theory, we have to go back to the end of World War II, when the United States secretly recruited Nazi scientists to help with America’s security interests”. Fact Check Was Lyme disease invented in a lab? No evidence suggests Lyme disease was invested in a lab. Also, the video has not used any reference that can be followed to verify the claim. Besides this, the video also shows images of strange creatures. While doing Google reverse image search, we found an article that claimed the images as “Montauk Monster”. This article speculated whether the images are of a water-degraded raccoon, a dog or a coyote. Contrary to the claim, available evidence shows the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi that causes Lyme disease existed for at least 60,000 years in North America which is quite before humans first reached the area. Moreover, an article by a science news website named LiveScience talks about a 5,300-year-old “ice mummy” which was found to have Lyme disease on genetic analysis. Besides this, the Plum Island Animal Disease Center has clearly mentioned, “Does not and has not performed research on Lyme disease” on their website. In conclusion, more evidence from the Plum research center and Lyme disease only suggests no link between the both.
