The Claim
A social media user shares a video claiming that her homemade CBD gummies recipe can reverse Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Fact Check
What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana, or manufactured in a laboratory. CBD that is extracted from the hemp plant is legal, but individual states have separate laws to regulate it.
Since CBD oil is not considered a drug, it can be a common additive in many products. This includes e-cigarettes (vape oil), lotions and various herbal supplements. It has also been shown to relieve symptoms of different disorders like epilepsy, anxiety and multiple sclerosis.
Can CBD gummies reverse Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?
No. Although many claims continue to be made about CBD oil, there is no evidence of any benefit. It’s certainly not an alternative to traditional diabetes management.
According to the research by NewCastle University, Type 2 diabetes is caused by a small amount of excess fat inside the liver and pancreas. Decreasing this excess fat through weight loss is the only way to put diabetes in remission.
The American Diabetes Association states that research on the effects of CBD on the body is still limited and so far no CBD products have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Dr. Altamash Shaikh, Consultant Endocrinologist, Diabetologist and Metabolic Super Specialist at Masina, Prince Aly Khan Hospital, Mumbai says, “No! Diabetes cannot be reversed by gummies. Reversal or Remission of Diabetes type 2 fundamentally requires 10-15% of body weight loss. And there is no scientific evidence to substantiate this in humans. Also, insulin is the only most appropriate treatment for type 1 diabetes and reversal is far from reality in them.”
Dr Sheikh further explains, “CBD may suppress immunity or worsen glaucoma or raise chances of bleeding if the patient is on blood thinners. Eligible as a treatment in only certain special types of epilepsy, CBD is no alternative to the current diabetes therapy basket.”
”One of the main disadvantages of such claims is that false and fraudulent matters without fact checking may be dispersed through the internet,” he shares.
