A weekend news report in the Sunday Life quotes Basile ‘G-Star’ Sery – who was selling medicinal tea on Facebook – telling its reporter that it can “aid” people suffering from COVID-19. Sery is also quoted saying “Coronavirus is mucus blocking the oxygen supply and the tea can flush out the mucus… It can help with coronavirus because it’s an anti-inflammatory. It’s the same as you’ll find in health shops.” A range of false information regarding tea remedies and COVID-19 Misinformation regarding teas “curing” COVID-19 have been circulating on social media platforms and messaging apps globally for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have seen claims regarding herbal remedies in India, ‘Hydroxychloroquine tea’, and a false claim which purported to be from a CNN news report, referring to the Chinese doctor Li Wenliang, who first raised concerns about the virus in China and later died of the illness. Other “cures” for COVID-19 have also been debunked. While scientific research into the effect of all kinds of chemicals on the virus continues, there is no evidence yet that any type of tea has any medical effect on the spread of the virus or the effect of its symptoms.
