  • Fact Check: This Aaj Tak show about doctor being attacked on air is a DEEPFAKE There is no record of a Dr Devi Shetty being attacked during a live show. The voices of both, the news anchor and the doctor, were altered. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check India Today found the video to be fake. Unrelated videos were edited with voice cloning technology and an Aaj Tak logo was added to give it credibilty. A video featuring the Aaj Tak logo purports to show a news segment, where a news anchor explains that a doctor was assaulted during a news debate by a fellow panelist. The video shows the assault and then cuts to the doctor in question speaking about the attack, and then claiming he had developed a new heart medicine that would help prevent cardiovascular diseases. A Facebook user, sharing the viral video, wrote, “Shocking incident of attack on Dr Deviprasad Shetty, famous cardiologist. Please make it viral. He should be shot dead.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the viral video was fake. There is no record of a Dr Devi Shetty being attacked during a live show. The voices of both, the news anchor and the doctor, were altered. OUR PROBE A search online revealed that the anchor in the viral video is India TV’s Prachi Parashar — not an Aaj Tak or India Today anchor. We observed that the words spoken by either the anchor or the doctor did not sync with their lip movements. This hinted at the audio having been digitally manipulated, likely using AI tools. We then reverse-searched keyframes from the brawl shown in the viral video, which led to the original clip shared by the YouTube channel of News Nation. The January 13, 2017 video featured the controversial religious figure and former “Bigg Boss” contestant Swami Om getting into a fight during a television debate. Dr Devi Shetty was not mentioned in the YouTube video even once. When we reverse-searched keyframes from the segment of the viral video that featured the doctor speaking about his new medicine, we found an NDTV Profit interview from November 24, 2022, titled: “BQ Exclusive: Dr. Devi Shetty on Health, Heart & Healing.” In this interview, Dr Shetty discussed several health-related topics like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, lack of doctors and health insurance. But, there was no mention of pharmaceutical companies or an endorsement of any medication as shown in the viral video. We also searched the internet to verify if Dr Shetty had endorsed any medicine for cardiovascular diseases, but it didn’t yield any results suggesting the same. Thus, it’s clear that this is not a real news segment at all. The Aaj Tak logo was added to unrelated videos where the speakers’ voices were manipulated to present a false narrative. Update: An earlier version of this story did not feature the anchor's name. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
