  • Fact Check: NOT from Juneteenth party! Video of crowd vandalising woman's car is from 2023 A video of a group of men, kicking and vandalising a woman's car allegedly during Juneteenth celebrations, turned out to be from May 2023. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from a street takeover in Connecticut in May 2023. It has nothing to do with Juneteenth celebrations. A video of a group of men vandalising a woman’s car is going viral on social media. In the clip, people can be seen kicking the car and jumping on its roof in the middle of a street. Even after the car’s occupant confronted the men, they continued to vandalise the car, until she finally drove away. Those sharing the video claimed that this incident unfolded recently in the United States during the Juneteenth celebration. On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Texas were freed. This is why Juneteenth is celebrated every year on June 19. It’s a federal holiday, which marks the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Sharing the video on Facebook, one person wrote, “Good Lord. What do you mean coward culture? This mostly peaceful Juneteenth celebration was doing just fine until this ‘uppity’ white woman showed up and ruined it for everyone! Good thing we have a strong leader and President like Joe Biden that can control this plague of white supremacists we’re facing and steady enough to restore unity and peace in our communities.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this video is from a street takeover in Connecticut in May 2023. It has nothing to do with Juneteenth celebrations. OUR PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to a news report about this incident, dated May 31, 2023. According to it, Stephanie and Dennis Sargisian of Tolland, Connecticut, were heading home from dinner in their car when they passed through a street takeover on May 21, 2023. The crowd surrounded their vehicle and started vandalising it. The report carried another video of the incident, shot from a different angle, which can be seen below. As per reports, a large group of people blocked Route 195 in Tolland on May 21, 2023, for doing street stunts. The woman, who was travelling on that route along with her partner confronted the group. As soon as she pulled over, the crowd began vandalising her vehicle. Following the incident, the couple called the police, who then arrested Jefferson Duron, the alleged leader of the takeover by the car enthusiasts. We also found a "Go Fund Me" page made by Staphanie’s daughter Megan Sargisian to help repair the car. It is noteworthy that an incident of shooting was reported in Oakland after a fight broke out during an illegal sideshow of vehicles on the night of June 19. However, it is more than clear that the viral video has nothing to do with the recent Juneteenth celebrations in the US.
