  • Fact Check: CPI wrongly labelled as 12th deadliest terror group in the world A screenshot claiming that the Communist Party of India (CPI) was listed as the 12th deadliest terror group in the world for the year 2022 is circulating on social media. A screenshot claiming that the Communist Party of India (CPI) was listed as the 12th deadliest terror group in the world for the year 2022 is circulating on social media. The screenshot states that CPI has been involved in 61 attacks in the last year resulting in 39 deaths and injuring 30 people. The list of terror groups is a part of the Institute of Economics and Peace's (IEP) Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report that was released on March 16, 2023. FACT CHECK: After the report was released, several social media users and news organizations shared a graphic showing CPI on the 12th spot in the list of "Deadliest Terror Groups of 2022". A user shared the picture as well on Twitter and wrote, “Congratulations Communist Party of India for being named in top 20 deadliest terror groups of 2022.” However, as a response to the tweet, IEP shared a response via their official Twitter handle to point out that the graphic shared by them was incorrect. The report was supposed to refer to Communist Party of India (Maoist) but was mislabelled. The CPI (Maoist) Marxist–Leninist–Maoist is a banned communist political party and militant organization in India. The party has been designated as a terrorist organization in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act since 2009. “The GTI report utilizes Dragonfly's Terrorism Tracker data and incorporated the terminology used in their database, which mislabelled the Communist Party of India as it did not include the correct (Maoist) attribution. As soon as we were made aware of this mistake, we took immediate action and corrected the report to accurately reflect the title of Communist Party of India (Maoist),” the statement reads. Nevertheless, the error has now been updated to include "Maoist" next to CPI. The CPI (Maoist) is now on the 12th spot in the list of "Deadliest Terror Groups of 2022". https://www.economicsandpeace.
