  • Fact Check: Is AIIMS selling magic bullets to hypertension patients? No, it's scam Neither is AIIMS Delhi manufacturing or selling a hypertension drug called Cardioton nor has India Today published any report about it. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check Neither is AIIMS Delhi selling any such medicine nor has India Today published a report on it. A website impersonating India Today is falsely claiming that AIIMS Delhi is manufacturing and selling a medicine called “Cardioton” which can cure hypertension. The website is being promoted through Facebook posts that feature a photo of India Today anchor Rajdeep Sardesai and the channel’s logo. Alongside the photo, it says, “Why are pharmacies silent about this? Hypertension will disappear once and for all, our best scientists have found and made a discovery!” The archived version of one such post and an India Today impersonating website, “inecuruhi.shop”, can be seen here and here. So, what’s going on here? No such drug India Today contacted AIIMS media cell head Dr Rima Dada and asked her about the alleged hypertension drug Cardioton being manufactured and sold online by the institute. She rubbished this claim, calling it fake news. Stolen identity The article on the impersonating website “inecuruhi.shop” claims to be based on the interview of a 93-year-old Indian chemist called Ramchandra Bhargava Sapre. However, a quick reverse search of the alleged image of “Ramchandra Bhargava Sapre” led us to an NBT report that said the photo was of Jagdish Gandhi, the founder of City Montessori School in Lucknow. Ramchandra Bhargava Sapre on the other hand, was the first national chess champion of India, who died in 1999. The scam The article claims that AIIMS manufactures and sells a medicine named Cardioton that can cure hypertension almost completely. Per the article, to order this drug, one needs to spin a wheel on the website, filled with various discount offers. We spun this wheel thrice and each time it stopped at a 50 per cent discount. As soon as the wheel stops spinning, the message, “Congratulations, you can order Cardioton at a maximum discount of 50 per cent” appears. Next, if you click on “OK”, you are asked for your name and phone number. You are then given a 10-minute deadline and a message below states: “If you do not fill out the form by the deadline, your reservation will be transferred to another person, because the product is running low.” Once you enter these personal details (which you shouldn’t), you’ll see a message that says your order has been accepted. Fake websites often use these pressure tactics to scam people and harvest their data. Site created recently Using GoDaddy’s WhoIs tool, we found that this website “inecuruhi.shop” was created in October 2023. Fraudsters often create fake websites for scamming people or harvesting their data and once their purpose is fulfilled, they deactivate the websites. According to GoDaddy, the website is registered in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. To sum it up, a fraudulent website is claiming that AIIMS is producing and selling a hypertension medicine Cardioton, which is totally false.
