  • A rumor that half of LA's fire trucks are electric and they have to go back to the firehouse to recharge every eight to ten hours is circulating online. For example, the America's Last Line of Defense (ALLOD) Facebook page posted it (archived) in January 2025: Half of LA's fire trucks are electric. They have to go back to the fire house to recharge every eight to ten hours. This is what happens when you give the reigns to woke idealists. ALLOD's Facebook post, as of this writing, reached over 3,400 reactions, over 970 comments, and 1,600 shares. Variations of the rumor spread on X, Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, as well. "45 of Los Angeles fire trucks have to go back to the fire department for 10 hours a day to recharge instead of fighting fires after refueling in 7 minutes this is why electric vehicles don't belong anywhere near public safety services," one Threads post (archived) read. Some readers seemed to interpret the rumor as a factual recounting of real-life events. However, there was no evidence that half of LA's fire trucks were electric nor that they had to go back to the fire house to recharge every eight to ten hours. As of January 2025, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) had only one fire truck with an electric engine, which is obviously not half of the fleet. Moreover, LAFD's website clarified that the electric fire engine "enables fully electric operation for roughly two hours and an on-board diesel generator can be activated for extended operations." Rather, the rumor about LA firetrucks originated with ALLOD — a network of websites and social media accounts that describes its output as being humorous or satirical in nature. Its bio states: "The flagship of the ALLOD network of trollery and propaganda for cash. Nothing on this page is real." The fictional story appeared after wildfires spread around Los Angeles in January 2025. America's Last Line of Defense has a history of making up stories for shares and comments. Snopes has addressed similar satirical claims from the ALLOD network in the past, including the assertion that the cost of a loaf of bread in California reached $10.99 in November 2024 because of a minimum-wage increase and a rumor that Tesla and X owner Elon Musk vowed to pay for President-elect Donald Trump's "extravagant inauguration bash" in 2025. For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources that call their output humorous or satirical.
