  • Fact Check: Animation goes viral as satellite visuals of chopper crash that killed CDS Gen Rawat A video is going viral on social media with the claim that it shows "aerial shots" of the IAF chopper that crashed in Tamil Nadu, killing 13 of its occupants, including CDS Gen Bipin Rawat. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is an animation created by a Tamil news channel. The channel never claimed it to be satellite imagery. The video just tried to explain how the crash took place. The incident is being probed by a tri-service commission. The nation is yet to recover from the shocking death of CDS Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu. The Internet is filled with theories about the cause of death even as a tri-service commission is probing the matter. Amid this, a video showing aerial shots of a chopper flying and then crashing into the hills has gone viral with the claim that these are satellite visuals of the crash that killed CDS Rawat. "Satellite video of helicopter crash in Conoor. It appears the tail rotor got snapped and the chopper suddenly turned in reverse direction and crashed within 2 seconds. No reaction time," reads the caption along with the video. India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that the viral video is actually an animation created by a Tamil news channel. The channel never claimed it to be satellite imagery. The video just tried to explain how the crash took place. The archived versions of the posts are saved here and here. AFWA probe The viral video appeared to be a digital creation and not real, especially in the last portion where the chopper is shown crashing down and getting engulfed in flames. There is also a "News 7" watermark on the video and Tamil text overlaid on it. News 7 is a Tamil news channel that also has a YouTube page. Taking this as a clue, we looked for recent news clips of the channel on Rawat's death and found a bulletin uploaded on December 10 with the same viral clip. Nowhere on the bulletin did the channel claim that it was satellite imagery. It was an animation created to show the helicopter's route. The ill-fated Mi-17V5 chopper carrying CDS Rawat and others crashed in Tamil Nadu's Coonoor on December 8. The government has appointed a tri-service inquiry commission led by a senior Indian Air Force (IAF) officer to investigate the crash.
