  • Fact Check: Not French protests! This photo shows Israeli demonstrations against Netanyahu govt An aerial view of a street flooded with people is going viral with many claiming the image shows protests against pension reforms in France. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This image shows people protesting against the judicial reforms in Israel. Protests in France against the pension reforms turning violent has been widely reported. Protestors have clashed with the police, and videos and photos of law enforcement authorities teargassing crowds, and protestors setting garbage on fire have been shared all over social media. A photo now making the rounds shows an aerial view image of a street flooded with people. Allegedly, this showed the protests in France. A Twitter user shared the photo and wrote, “Protests in Paris, last night.” The archived version of this claim can be seen here. India Today’s investigation found that this photo is not from France at all. It’s from Israel. THE PHOTO We noticed that a person replying to the tweet in question pointed out that this image was from Israel. Reverse-searching the viral image with relevant keywords led us to a Reuters report from March 5, 2023. The report containing the photo was about the recent protests in Israel against the government’s plan to overhaul the judicial system. As per the information given in the article, the image was clicked by photographer Ilan Rosenberg in Tel Aviv on March 4, 2023. This image was also used in the reports by The Jerusalem Post and US News. A series of protests and strikes began in Israel in early 2023 after Benjamin Netanyahu’s government proposed a judicial overhaul that would limit the powers of the Supreme Court. These protests intensified after he fired his defence minister, who had spoken against this plan. On March 27, Netanyahu announced a delay in the judicial overhaul plan. However, despite this delay, the protests are still going on in the country. GEOLOCATING THE PROTEST SITE We were able to find the exact location seen in the viral image. We discovered that Reuters photographer Ilan Rosenberg had shared a photo from the protests on March 5 on his Facebook page. Upon comparing this image with the viral image, we could conclude that they were both shot at the same location. In the image posted on Rosenberg’s Facebook page, we could see “Crown Plaza City Center” written on a tall building. Next, we attempted to see the satellite view of this building on Google maps. One of the towers of the Crown Plaza City Center looks triangular from the aerial view. This shape can be seen in the image posted on Rosenberg’s Facebook page as well as in Google Maps’ satellite view. Also, on the other side of the road, there is the Tel Aviv government complex building which is semi-circular on one side and flat on the other side. Thus, it became clear that an image related to the protests in Israel is being falsely shared as protests in France.
