  • A video showing a temple is going viral on social media with a false claim that it shows Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala in Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh. The claim also adds that it shows a rare 'Ekantha Darshan'. (Archives of similar claims can be seen here and here.) What's the truth?: This claim is false. The temple in the viral video is a replica of the Tirumala Venkateswara Swamy Temple located in Alipiri, Andhra Pradesh. The Chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams had also clarified in 2020 that cameras are not allowed inside the main sanctum of the Tirumala temple. How did we find out the truth?: We performed a reverse image search of the keyframes from the viral video and came across reports which featured the same visuals as seen in the viral video. A report shared by The Hindu on 13 June 2016 specified the temple to be a replica of the Tirumala temple in Alipiri, Andhra Pradesh. It further added that recording inside the Tirumala pilgrimage site is prohibited because of which the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) later constructed a replica of the temple seven years ago in Alipiri. This replica was built to broadcast temple rituals on its Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel. We compared both the visuals and noticed the same pillars, entrance way and chandeliers. We also found more videos (here and here) which resembled the temple shown in the viral video and it specified it to be the replica temple. A video shared by the National Geographic India channel on 13 July 2023, titled “The Replica Temple? | Inside Tirumala Tirupati” also carries similar visuals. It states that this replica of the original Tirumala temple was constructed in 2008. We also found photos of the replica temple on Google Maps. What about the original temple?: We found a report from 2020 which quoted the Chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, Y.V. Subba Reddy, who clarified that video recording is not permitted inside the main temple in Tirupati. He further stated that the video circulating online was filmed at the replica temple in Alipiri. Conclusion: An old video of a replica temple of the Tirumala-Tirupati temple located in Alipiri is being shared as the actual Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala.
