  • An image showing the late former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away on 26 December, is going viral on social media. The claim states that this photo of Singh lying on a hospital bed is the last photo of the politician. (Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.) Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false. This image dates back to 2021, when Singh was admitted to the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. The image was taken when Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya went to meet the former PM. What we found: At first, we ran a relevant keyword search about the image and found multiple reports from 2021 which stated about a controversy about an image of Singh taken inside the hospital. A report by the Indian Express from 15 October 2021 stated that the Congress criticised the then Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for reportedly bringing a photographer during his visit to Singh at the AIIMS, Delhi. The Congress' assault followed allegations made by Daman Singh, daughter of the former PM, stating that the minister hired a photographer against the family's desires. It included a post on X by Congress leader Manickam Tagore from 2021, which showed a similar image to the viral photo. We ran a Google reverse image search on the image posted by Tagore and found news reports from 2021 which featured the same photo as the viral image. Some reports by India TV and The Tribune featured the image. Similarly, we found a post on Facebook by the page "With RG" with the same image from 2021 which stated, "Praying for Dr Manmohan Singh! May God give you good health" In August 2023, Singh participated in the Rajya Sabha sessions while on a wheelchair. Earlier this year, an image of the former PM displaying his fingers stained with permanent ink after casting his vote via postal ballots for the Lok Sabha elections also appeared. Manmohan Singh's demise: He passed away on 26 December at the age of 92. Singh served as the PM from 2004 to 2014. A seven-day state mourning has been announced after his demise. Conclusion: An old image of Manmohan Singh is going viral to falsely claim that it is the last photo of him before his death.
