Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video shows Amena Begum, a Muslim woman who was the principal of a government college in Bangladesh, resigning from her post amid pressure from student protestors. Amid global protests against attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government, a video of a woman forcefully made to tender her resignation is making the rounds on social media. According to those sharing the clip, Muslims in Bangladesh forced this Hindu woman to resign from her government job. In the clip, a woman is seen writing something on a piece of paper in a crowded office. She throws her pen away in anger as a person puts a stamp on that paper and then shows it to the people surrounding her, who cheered loudly. The woman then leaves the premises of a building surrounded by a huge crowd. Sharing the video on Instagram, one person wrote, “Mass forced resignation of Hindus from government offices in Bangladesh. Jago Hindu Jago.” India Today Fact Check found that the video showed Amena Begum, a Muslim woman who was the principal of a government college in Bangladesh, resigning from her post amid pressure from student agitators. OUR PROBE Reverse searching keyframes from the viral video led us to a Facebook post, dated August 11, containing the video. Its caption in Bangla stated that Amena Begum, the principal of Kabi Nazrul College, resigned and threw away her pen. Further searches led us to multiple media reports about this incident. According to one report, the principal of Kabi Nazrul Government College, Amena Begum, quit on August 11, after protesting students demanded her resignation. Reportedly, student protesters began chanting slogans demanding her resignation from 11 that morning. As soon as Begum reached the campus, the agitating students surrounded her in the office. Giving in to the pressure, Begum resigned from her post writing “I resigned” on a white paper and signing it. Per reports, the protesting students accused Begum of not inquiring into the death of four students and the hundreds of students who got injured during the anti-quota protests. The students also alleged that she supported Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, and accused her of corruption and various irregularities. Following this incident, students also demanded the dissolution of the teachers’ council of the college, accusing the members of being pro-Awami League. Following this, the vice principal of the college, Saleh Ahmed Fakir dissolved the teachers’ council as well. We also found the Facebook page of Kabi Nazrul Government College, where a post made on August 7 this year featured the photo of Amena Begum. It stated that she was a member of Awami League's Education and Human Resources Subcommittee (2022-2025). It is thus, clear that a video of a Muslim principal of a government college in Bangladesh being forced by students to resign was passed off as atrocities on Hindus in the strife-hit country.
