  • Fact Check: 2018 satellite view of disaster-hit Indonesia FALSELY shared as recent A satellite video shows how the recent Indonesian earthquake caused destruction. As per the AFWA probe, the viral clip is from 2018 when back-to-back natural disasters, a massive earthquake, and a tsunami hit the Indonesian coastal island of Sulawesi. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral clip is from 2018 when back-to-back natural disasters, a massive earthquake, and a tsunami hit the Indonesian coastal island of Sulawesi. A deadly earthquake shook Indonesia's main island of Java on November 21, reportedly killing at least 272 people. As search and rescue operations continued, many on social media shared a satellite view of what they claimed was the quake. The terrifying video shows land moving almost like liquid. One person shared this clip and wrote on Twitter, "Satellite image of the earthquake taking place in Indonesia. No escape for those caught in the active earthquake zone. Everything was destroyed in the path of the earthquake." The archived version of this post can be seen here. However, AFWA's investigation found that the viral clip had no link with Indonesia's recent earthquake. The original video was from 2018 when back-to-back natural disasters, a massive earthquake, and a tsunami hit the Indonesian coastal island of Sulawesi. AFWA Probe A reverse search of the clip’s keyframes led us to various news articles. On October 9, 2018, the Associated Press published a report titled, "10 minutes of terror: A quake, a tsunami, and a missing son”. It contained a similar video. The Weather Channel’s website also shared this clip in a report titled, "12 GIFs That Show How Weather Left Its Mark in 2018" on December 28, 2018. Per the report, on September 28, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake rocked the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, triggering a tsunami and killing more than 2,000 people in the twin disasters. Other websites like Yahoo shared this clip as well. On YouTube, we found the same video uploaded to the Hindustan Times’ channel on October 2, 2018, titled, "Watch: Satellite images of massive earthquake and tsunami that hit the Indonesian Island." Thus, we conclude that the viral video, while from Indonesia, is four years old.
