Fact Check
What is cervical pain?
The pain in the neck or cervical spine is called cervical pain. The cervical spine is made of bones, nerves, muscles, ligaments, and tendons allowing the neck to move in all directions. The cervical pain occurs due to cervical spondylolysis or osteoarthritis. Both these reasons change the bones, discs, or joints that are connected to the neck.
As the cervical spine also contains the spinal cord to send messages from the brain to the body, the pain can reach the neck to affect the shoulders. Evidence also shows that most cervical pains are due to the wear and tear of the cartilage and bones. So, cervical pain is common in aging people.
The treatment of cervical pain depends on the underlying cause. If the reason is muscle strain or ligament sprain, treatment typically involves rest, ice, physical therapy, and over-the-counter pain medications. But the doctor can also prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, muscle relaxants, anti-seizure medications, and antidepressants.
What is lumbar pain?
The pain in the back or lumbar spine is called lumbar pain. The lumbar spine consists of five vertebrae in the lower back. The lumbar spine provides support to the body weight, protects the spinal cord, and is responsible for body motions.
Any damage to the lumbar spine can negatively affect the spine causing lower back pain, arthritis, degenerative bone and disk disease, and stenosis. Some risk factors of the lumbar spine include:
- strains and muscle sprains in the lower back
- Sciatica
- Intervertebral disc generation
- Herniated or ruptured discs
- Traumatic injury
- Spinal stenosis
- Age
- Carrying heavy backpacks
- Low fitness level
- Weight gain
- Genetics
- Pregnancy
Lumbar spine pain is treated using over-the-counter pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory or numbing injections, neuromodulatory agents, and prescription pain relievers. Besides this, treatments such as the use of cold packs, limiting exercise, improving lifestyle, physical therapy, acupuncture, and other alternative treatments can also ease the pain. If these treatments do not work, doctors can prescribe surgery. It can be laminectomy, discectomy and microdiscectomy, spinal fusion, foraminotomy, disc replacement surgery, laser surgery, radiofrequency lesioning, and spinal cord stimulation.
Can a neck topical mist cure all reasons for spinal and shoulder pain?
Not exactly. The treatment for spinal and shoulder pain depends upon the cause. A neck topical mist may soothe sprains, cramps, or muscle strains to reduce the intensity of the pain.
We have not fact-checked the effectiveness of the South Moon: Cervical Position Type Condensation Spray. We have only fact-checked the marketing claims related to the product, especially their content.
That said, the video falsely shows a damaged cervical spine recovering to good condition. A damaged spine cannot be reversed to its original condition. However, some research papers have shown that researchers are working on new treatments to improve spinal health after an injury.
Besides this, we also ran a Google Reverse Image Search and found no evidence showing the professional experience of the people in the claimed video.
Dr Kiran Kulkarni, FIFA- AFC Medical Officer, and Consultant in Sports & Exercise Medicine from Dharwad, Karnataka, says, “It’s a counter irritant spray which may for a brief period of time reduce pain and discomfort, but the underlying pathology cannot be corrected in the long run.”
