Quick Take
An Instagram post claims that eating turmeric in the squat position can prevent cancer for life. We did the fact check to term it as Mostly False.
The Claim
According to an Instagram video, one can completely prevent cancer by consuming a piece of turmeric each morning on an empty stomach while seated in the squat position or garland pose. The proponent of this claim further suggests that adhering to this regimen guarantees that an individual will never develop cancer.
Fact Check
What are the known health benefits of turmeric?
Turmeric is a golden-yellow spice commonly used in South Asian and Middle Eastern cooking. The primary active component of turmeric is curcumin, which has been extensively studied for its potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. Research indicates that curcumin can modulate various molecular targets and signalling pathways involved in cancer progression. A 2019 study found that curcumin significantly increases serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This factor is important for brain health. Curcumin also shows potential for better cardiac health.
Despite these promising qualities, curcumin’s bioavailability is notably low. The body struggles to absorb significant amounts, which complicates its potential as a cancer preventative ingredient. A 2022 study discusses curcumin’s anticancer potential, noting it inhibits cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis (cell death) in various cancers. This study highlights challenges like poor solubility and bioavailability, though nanotechnology may improve its effects. Curcumin is generally safe with minimal side effects like diarrhoea and nausea reported. Enhancers like piperine, found in black pepper, can increase its absorption by 2000%.
Another 2021 study examines curcumin, a compound from turmeric, for its potential to prevent and treat cancer. It discusses how curcumin impacts various cellular processes and immune responses that are linked to cancer development. Although curcumin shows promise due to its ability to modify cancer-related pathways, more research and clinical trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness as a cancer treatment.
Does the timing and method of turmeric consumption impact its effectiveness?
Consuming turmeric on an empty stomach is thought by some to boost its absorption and effectiveness, as there is less competition for metabolic processes compared to when the stomach is full. However, scientific consensus does not strongly support the idea that consuming turmeric on an empty stomach dramatically enhances its preventive or therapeutic impacts, especially concerning cancer.
Can the squat pose influence the benefits of turmeric consumption?
The squat pose, or Malasana, or Garland pose has benefits for flexibility and digestion. It is hypothesised that being in a squat can help facilitate smoother digestion and quicker toxin release. This can help in the body’s detoxification processes. However, there is no scientific evidence linking the squat position directly with enhanced absorption of dietary supplements or their effectiveness in disease prevention, including cancer.
Can eating a piece of turmeric while sitting in the squat pose prevent cancer for life?
No, not really. Turmeric possesses several beneficial properties. But, suggesting that its consumption, particularly in a specific posture, can provide lifelong protection against cancer is highly misleading and scientifically baseless. Cancer is a multifaceted disease influenced by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. No single dietary practice or superfood can provide complete immunity against the development of cancer. It is important to approach cancer prevention with a holistic view that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and consistent medical care.
The National Cancer Institute, Cancer Research UK, Cancer Council Australia, and the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center provide insights into the potential of turmeric in cancer prevention. They highlight that turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. But, there is insufficient evidence to conclusively recommend it as a cancer prevention or treatment method. Studies are ongoing, but current clinical evidence does not support turmeric as a standalone treatment for cancer. Each organisation emphasises the need for more research to understand turmeric’s role fully.
What does an expert say?
We sought expert opinion from Dr Pooja Khullar, a Radiation Oncologist at Dharamshila Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, on turmeric’s cancer prevention potential. She says, “It’s important to clarify that no single food or exercise, including turmeric or the squat pose, can prevent cancer entirely. Cancer prevention involves a comprehensive approach that includes a balanced diet with maximum fruit and vegetables, regular exercise, avoiding carcinogens as much as possible, avoid smoking and alcohol , avoid direct long term sun exposure and timely medical screenings. I will tell people to focus on a holistic health strategy and consult medical professionals for expert advice.”
Are natural remedies effective in cancer prevention?
Natural remedies, including herbs like turmeric, play a supportive role in holistic health approaches. But these should not serve as definitive cures for complex diseases like cancer. Although some natural compounds possess anticancer properties in lab studies, translating these effects to human cancer prevention or treatment is still not conclusive. Preventing cancer involves a mix of genetics, lifestyle choices, environment, and medical care. Relying solely on natural remedies can lead to missed opportunities for diagnosis and treatment based on established medical science.
Conclusion
The claim that eating turmeric in the squat position, every morning on an empty stomach can prevent cancer for life is mostly false. While turmeric has health benefits and the squat pose may improve physical well-being, these practices alone are insufficient as cancer prevention methods. Recognising the limitations and appropriate applications of natural remedies is essential in maintaining health and preventing disease effectively. Avoid believing health claims from social media until and unless you cross check the credibility of the source. This may lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment leading to poor health outcomes.
