  • Fact Check: Rohingyas turning rowdies against Mathura police? No, this video is from Assam A video of a brawl between a group of individuals and Assamese police officers was falsely shared as an incident from Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is not from Mathura but from Assam. According to the police, it’s a 2023 video. A video of a tense confrontation between several men and police officers is making rounds on social media. In it, an elderly Muslim man could be seen attacking the cops with a bamboo stick. Those sharing this video claimed it showed Rohingya Muslims in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district attacking the police check who tried to check their identity cards. One such post on X read: "Rohingyas or Rowdies? UP Police went to check IDs of Rohingya Muslims living in Mathura, UP. Instead of cooperating these illegal intruders started fighting with the Police. Deport all the Rohingyas from India." India Today Fact Check found that the video in question is not from Uttar Pradesh but from Assam. OUR PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to this clip shared by Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika on X on June 28. The Assamese post roughly translates to, "This incident occurred in Dhing a few days ago." Dhing is a village in the northwest of the Nagaon district in Assam. He added, "See how the people of a particular community are becoming intolerant and attacking personnel on duty." Following the minister, a YouTube channel named The Pulse NE also shared this video. A subsequent keyword search led us to a report from India Today North East dated June 28 that cited Hazarika's post and highlighted that the video triggered a series of controversies amid allegations by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that a specific group of people was causing disturbances in the state following the Lok Sabha election results. However, an Assam Tribune report from June 29 quoted the Assam DGP GP Singh cautioning those sharing the video. Singh claimed in an X post that the video was old and asked people to refrain from sharing it. Although he did not reveal the date or place of the occurrence, police sources informed The Assam Tribune that the incident in the video took place in the Sutirpar area under the Juria Police Station in Nagaon in February 2023. The Mathura Police also took to X to inform that the video was not from the UP district. Although we could not independently pinpoint the date or location of the video, it is clear that it’s not from UP.
