  • IMAGES of Peter Obi with the French president, Emmanuel Macron at the Paris summit held in France have been circulating on social media space in Nigeria. Peter Obi is the Labour Party’s presidential candidate The photos archived here were posted by a Twitter user, Wale Adedayo with the username: @mario9jaa, on Sunday, June 25, 2023 with a caption that reads: “for peace to reign.” It has since then gained traction with of over hundred thousand views, more than a thousand likes and over 300 retweets as of Monday, June 26,2023. The Paris summit, which was hosted by President Macron, was held at Palais Brongniart on between June 22 and 23, 2023. The meeting, was attended by the Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other global leaders, multilateral institutions, financial experts and economists. The aim of the two-day climate and finance summit was to set up concrete measures to help poor and developing countries whose predicaments have been worsened by the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine better tackle poverty and climate change, a Reuters analysis revealed. CLAIM Images show Peter Obi with French President, Emmanuel Macron, at the Paris summit in France. THE FINDINGS Findings by the FactCheckHub show that the claim is MISLEADING. Checks revealed that Obi was not present at the global summit in Paris. A Google Lens search on the viral images led our researcher to the original photos which were taken at the event. The original images show Nigerian president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with President Macron instead, especially on the exact spots where Obi was photoshopped in. THE VERDICT The claim that the images show Peter Obi with French President, Emmanuel Macron, at the Paris summit in France is MISLEADING; findings show that they were doctored.
