  • Fact Check: Viral video DOES NOT show forced mass testing for Covid-19 in China A video of people standing in a queue has gone viral on social media, with the claim that people in China were being handcuffed and forcibly tested for Covid-19. India Today's AFWA has found the claim to be misleading. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral video has no connection with mass Covid-19 testing. It shows a police raid on a pornography racket in Lanzhou in northwestern China. China employs a "zero Covid" policy that includes strict isolation rules, local lockdowns, and mass testing. Wuhan, a city with a population of 12 million, was reportedly put under lockdown recently when regular testing uncovered two asymptomatic cases and two more cases were found through contact tracing. Following this, a video of people standing in a queue went viral. The claim alongside said that people in China were being handcuffed and forcibly tested for Covid-19. AFWA’s investigation found this video did not show any such thing. Far from it, it was from a police raid on a pornography racket in Lanzhou in northwestern China. AFWA Probe With a combination of reverse image and keyword searches on the Chinese search engine Baidu, we found a news report containing similar photos in a Chinese news outlet Lanzhou Daily. Lanzhou is the capital city of northwest China's Gansu province. The English translation of the headline said, “Chengguan police take down a den of pornography.” Per this report, the police busted a pornography and prostitution racket in the Chengguan district in Lanzhou in April. We compared the images published in the new article with the screenshots of the viral video and identified identical characters, signboards, and windows in both. This made it clear that the video did not show forced mass Covid-19 testing. We also found an Agence France-Presse report from last month debunking the same viral claim. That China has taken harsh measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 is undeniable, but this video does not show any of that.
