India Today Fact Check
This video was from Rajasthan's Jodhpur. The incident occurred in the last week of May and therefore has no links to Cyclone Biparjoy that made landfall on June 15.
The intensity of Cyclone Biparjoy was downgraded from “very severe” to “severe” after making landfall in coastal Gujarat on June 15. However, misinformation surrounding Cyclone Biparjoy continues to circulate on social media with the same gusto as before.
In this article, we will fact-check two viral videos that purportedly depict the impact of the cyclone.
Tree falling on a moving scooter
The first video shows a large part of a tree falling on a scooter passing under it, knocking it and the people aboard to the ground, and partially blocking the road.
A person tweeted the video, stating, "Unfortunate incidents keep occurring due to heavy winds. Unsafe to travel outside. #CycloneBiporjoy." The archived version of the post can be seen here.
We reverse-searched the video's keyframes and found the same clip featured in several media reports from May 2023. According to an NDTV report published on May 30, the video was from Jodhpur in Rajasthan.
The three individuals on the scooter were reportedly injured in the incident. An orange alert was issued in parts of Rajasthan on May 28 and 29, and a yellow alert for May 30 and 31 in anticipation of thunderstorms and gusty winds in the region.
The video was also uploaded to the YouTube channel of the Economic Times on May 30. The title of the video said, "Freak accident in Jodhpur, tree falls on moving scooter, 3 riders injured; incident caught on cam."
Hence, it is evident that the video in question is at least two weeks old and from Rajasthan.
Scary tornado
The second video allegedly shows Cyclone Biparjoy hitting the Devbhumi Dwarka district located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat. The video showed a gigantic tornado advancing ahead, causing what appeared to be electrical explosions along the way. The archived version of the post can be seen here.
The oldest version of this video we could find through a reverse search was from May 5, 2022. Around that time, it was shared by multiple individuals on social media, that said it showed the Andover tornado that struck Andover in Massachusetts, United States, on April 29, 2022.
According to news reports, around 1,000 buildings in Andover were affected by the tornado.
The same clip was also featured in a Times Now report that claimed the video was from the Andover tornado. However, we were not able to independently verify the source of the video.
It is, hence, clear that the video in question is over a year old and not from India at all.
