India Today Fact Check
This video is from Gandhi’s visit to his parliament constituency Wayanad in Kerala. It was not an election campaign.
High-octane campaigning in poll-bound Karnataka has national leaders visiting the southern state. Reportedly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold more than 20 rallies leading up to the assembly elections. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also seen campaigning in the state on April 16 and 17.
Now, a video of Gandhi interacting with a group of people and taking photos with them is being circulated on social media with claims that the Congress leader has been conducting a door-to-door campaign in Karnataka.
India Today's investigation found that the video is from Gandhi's parliamentary constituency, Wayanad, in Kerala.
Our Probe
In the video in question, we could hear a few people speaking in Malayalam, indicating that the video may have been from Kerala. We then did a reverse search of the group photo seen at the 0.33 second mark in the video.
This led us to a Facebook post by Congress leader Nagma, who had shared the same photo on March 21. The post also contained photos of Gandhi handing over keys to houses built by the Bangalore Kerala Samajam to the beneficiaries. According to the post, the photo was taken in Muttil village in Wayanad, Kerala.
With the help of a keyword search, we found the same photo shared on the official Facebook pages of Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. In his post, Gandhi mentioned multiple Wayanad events he had participated in on March 21.
We then reached out to Indian Youth Congress’ Wayanad district president Shamnad Marakkar, who confirmed that the video is from the Muttil Panchayat Office in Wayanad, where the key distribution ceremony was held.
Multiple media organisations also reported on this visit by the Congress leader to Wayanad on March 21. On the same day, Gandhi also met with around 300 elected members of local administrative bodies in Wayanad. He also inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations of the Fatima Mata Mission Hospital and visited the residence of an auto driver who died in an accident.
Rahul Gandhi's Karnataka Campaign
On April 16 and 17, Gandhi was in poll-bound Karnataka. During his visit, the Congress leader attended multiple rallies in Kolar and Bidar. However, we could not find any credible reports about Gandhi conducting a door-to-door campaign in Karnataka. India Today's Karnataka bureau also confirmed that Gandhi participated only in rallies.
It is hence clear that the video in question is from Kerala’s Wayanad. At the time of filing this story, Gandhi did not participate in a door-to-door election campaign in Karnataka.
