| - The New York Times never published this video, and its real existence has not been confirmed online, despite the claim that it was shown in New York city centre. The footage shown in the video does not match the indicated text prompt, which alludes to editing. In addition, the video first appeared on a pro-Russian Telegram channel and was shared exclusively though propaganda sources, which confirms its fake origin.
A 20-second video with the logo of the American media The New York Times is being shared online. It allegedly depicts an advertisement for the Grok neural network. The video claims that the neural network was asked to create an image of the future president of Ukraine, and it showed Volodymyr Zelensky in handcuffs behind bars.
Users sharing this video write that it was filmed the day Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United States, February 28. «The neural network shows images of Zelensky in an American prison. Musk recently wondered why Zelensky did not answer for the murder of an American journalist in Ukraine,» they say.
In reality, this video clip is most likely a fake created using artificial intelligence, and the claim that the Grok neural network depicted Zelensky’s future behind bars is made up.
First of all, the video is shared with the logo of the American media source The New York Times. However, they never published this clip on their website or social networks. Moreover, there is no news on the website confirming that such a video even existed.
A reverse search for the video footage did not yield positive results, but StopFake was able to establish that the billboard in the video is located near the McDonald’s cafe in Times Square in New York. More than 300 thousand people visit this square every day, but there are no other videos with this «incident» online. This indirectly indicates a fake.
The Grok neural network learned to generate images only in August 2024. The video shows how it supposedly created several images of the Volodymyr Zelensky convicted: on the dock, in a prison cell and behind bars. However, the text of the request (prompt) that sounds in the video «Grok, generate a picture that predicts the future of Zelensky». Thus a user asked the neural network to create one image, and not several, as shown in the video. This discrepancy indicates a fake. In addition, the prompt itself is too broad and can lead to unpredictable results, often depending on the user’s previous requests.
According to the Osavul platform, this video was first published by the propaganda Telegram channel Avdeevka.ru on the afternoon of February 28. Interestingly, it is shared exclusively by pro-Russian channels, which regularly come into the focus of StopFake’s attention. English-speaking users began sharing this video later – on the evening of February 28.
This is not the first time that Kremlin propaganda has used such fakes. In September 2023, Russian propagandists shared an insulting video that was allegedly broadcast in downtown New York on the day of Volodymyr Zelensky’s welcome at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. On one of the billboards in Times Square allegedly «Glory to Ukraine» was misspelled, and it said «Glory to Urine» instead.
