  • Fact Check: Old video from Yemen falsely shared as Hamas militants forcing Gazans to fight! India Today Fact Check found that this video shows security forces supported by the UAE in Yemen and not Hamas militants in Gaza. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows security forces supported by the UAE in Yemen and not Hamas militants in Gaza. Amid the Israel Defence Forces’ continued siege of Gaza, a video making rounds over the internet purports to show Hamas militants forcing Gazans to fight. The video shows a group of uniformed armed men storming into a house and dragging a man out. Sharing the video on X, a person wrote, “Hamas is entering the homes of men in Gaza to drag them out and force them to fight against the Israeli Army which is advancing in northern Gaza. It’s quite possible that these children will never see their father again. Hamas must be stopped.” The archived version of such claims can be seen here and here. India Today Fact Check found that this video shows security forces supported by the UAE in Yemen and not Hamas militants in Gaza. Also, this video has been on the internet since before the recent conflict started on October 7. Our Probe Under the viral post, an X user wrote that the video was from Yemen and not related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Taking a clue from this, we reverse-searched keyframes from the video, which led us to an X post from October 3, 2023, by Yemeni journalist Sameer Alnamri. This Arabic post translates to, “As per the information, This video is from Mukalla, Hadhramaut, Yemen. Local security forces supported by the UAE stormed the homes of citizens, accusing them of being disruptive and not responding to the authorities. The accused’s wife filmed the moment of the raid and terrorising the children.” Mukalla is a seaport and the capital city of Yemen's largest governorate, Hadhramaut. In another post on October 3, 2023, a Yemeni social media influencer with over 40,000 followers shared the same video and claimed it to be from Al Mukalla, Yemen. Both these videos predate the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the present conflict in Gaza. Taking a hint from this, we searched the internet using relevant keywords and found this video uploaded to YouTube by a number of Yemeni media channels. We also found various news reports that say the incident took place in Yemen. These reports included screengrabs of the viral video. As per reports, on October 3, security forces supported by factions loyal to the UAE in Al Mukalla started a campaign to arrest those they said had been subjected to judicial rulings. Security agencies in the city with the support of the Hadhrami Elite Forces carried out this campaign against alleged outlaws. Thus, it is more than clear that this video is unrelated to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
