India Today Fact Check
This video is not real. It’s AI-generated.
A series of videos allegedly showing prominent Indian actresses kissing each other have gone viral on social media platforms. The most talked-about clip amongst these shows Kiara Advani and Kareena Kapoor Khan sharing a kiss.
Similarly, another clip shows actresses Janhvi Kapoor and Nora Fatehi. Yet another features Kajal Aggarwal and Tamannaah Bhatia. Archives of two such posts can be seen here and here.
India Today Fact Check found that these videos are AI-generated. They were created by modifying still images of these actresses using an AI tool called Vidu.
OUR PROBE
To begin with, had there been real publicly available videos of these fairly popular actresses kissing each other, it would have been all over the news. However, we didn’t find any such reports.
Secondly, multiple elements in these videos hint at them being AI-generated. For example, in the video featuring Janhvi Kapoor and Nora Fatehi, their hand movements look extremely weird. Similarly, in the other video, Kajal Aggarwal seems to be kissing Tamannaah Bhatia below her nose and above her lips.
HOW WERE THESE VIDEOS CREATED?
Upon carefully looking at them, we observed the watermark of Vidu, an AI tool that can create realistic videos using still images. Vidu is one of the many tools being used to create short video clips of people hugging or kissing each other.
Using Vidu, we generated a video of AI-generated creatures with human bodies and animal heads kissing each other within seconds. This was very similar to the viral videos.
REAL IMAGES, FAKE VIDEOS
Using reverse search, we found that the viral video featuring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kiara Advani was created using a still from a commercial for the beauty brand Tira. In the original image, actress Suhana Khan also posed with them. However, she was cropped from the image while creating the viral video.
Similarly, Janhvi Kapoor and Nora Fatehi’s video was created using two separate images. While the former’s photo was taken from an episode of the celebrity talk show Koffee with Karan, the latter’s was taken from a food supplement commercial.
BODY PARTS ALTERED
We compared the viral video with the original images and found that some stills were altered to increase the actresses’ bust sizes. In some cases, the images were even laterally inverted or mirrored to show them facing each other in the video.
Thus, it’s clear that none of these videos are real.
