  • Fact Check: NOT heavy floods in Palestine, this video is at least five years old India Today found that the video has been on the internet since as early as 2018. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video has been present on the internet since as early as 2018. According to reports from the time, it shows flooding in Lebanon. A video circulating on social media allegedly shows a massive flood in the Palestinian city of Jericho in the West Bank. In it, a heavy stream of muddy floodwater can be seen surging past a residential area. India Today found that the video is at least five years old. Back in 2018, it was widely shared as flash floods in Lebanon. Our Probe With the help of a reverse image search, we found the same video shared by a Facebook page on June 15, 2018. As per this post, the video shows flash floods that hit the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, in Ras Baalbek, Lebanon on June 13, 2018. The Facebook page credited the video to “Lebanon Weather”. We then checked the Facebook page of “Lebanon Weather” and found the same video shared by it on June 13, 2018. According to this post as well, the video was from Lebanon’s Baalbek. The page has also posted other videos of flash floods, reportedly shot in Ras Baalbek. The viral video and similar others were also shared by several Facebook users on June 13 and 14, 2018 claiming to show floods in Ras Baalbek. We also found parts of this video used in a news report from June 13, 2018 about the floods. A screenshot from the video in question was also featured in an information note on the June 2018 floods in Ras Baalbek, prepared by the Climate Change and Environment Program at Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs under the American University of Beirut. According to reports from the time, heavy rains led to flash floods in Ras Baalbek on June 13 and 14, 2018, causing flooding in houses and shops and submerging farmlands. Reuters recently reported about the start of winter rains in Gaza and consequent fears about the possibility of flooding among homeless Palestinians living in makeshift tents following Israeli bombing. However, we couldn’t find any reports of heavy floods in Jericho. It is hence clear that the video in question is years old and not from Palestine.
