  • Fact Check: No, Hardik Patel DID NOT swear to not vote for BJP in 2022 Gujarat polls, this clip is from 2017 AFWA's investigation found that the video in question is from 2017, long before Hardik Patel joined the BJP. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from a rally held by Patel ahead of the 2017 Gujarat assembly elections. At the time, he had backed the Congress party. Patel joined the BJP in June 2022. With only hours left for phase one of the assembly elections in Gujarat, a video of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Hardik Patel vowing not to vote for the saffron party has been widely shared on social media. The video was shared by the Aam Aadmi Party’s Delhi MLA Naresh Balyan on Twitter, who wrote: "Big ruckus in the BJP before Gujarat elections. Hardik Patel swore by his ancestral God that he will not vote for BJP. They have tortured our people and committed murders." In the video, Patel can be seen speaking to a large crowd. “We take oath on our ancestral God that whoever did atrocity on us, bullied us, and those who are filled with arrogance, we will teach such people a lesson by not voting for BJP,” Patel said in the video. The archived versions of similar posts can be seen here and here. AFWA’s investigation found that the video in question is from 2017, long before Patel joined the BJP. AFWA PROBE In the viral video, the words “Jan Sankalp Sabha” and “Bhavnagar” can be seen written in Gujarati. With the help of relevant keywords, we found a longer version of the viral video uploaded to Patel’s official Facebook page on December 7, 2017. Per the description of this video, the event was held in Gujarat's Bhavnagar. The original video was also uploaded by multiple YouTube channels on December 7 that year. A 360-degree view of the event was also shared by India Today on Facebook. Per this post, the video was from a rally held during the 2017 Gujarat assembly elections. Patel, who made OBC status for the Patidar caste his political plank, supported the Congress during the 2017 Gujarat assembly elections. As per reports, the young leader was campaigning across the state, mostly in Patidar-dominated areas, to create an anti-BJP atmosphere, prior to the 2017 polls. In fact, Patel formally joined the BJP on June 2, 2022, almost five years after this video was shot. We couldn’t find any credible reports about a recent tussle between Patel and the BJP. On his social media, Patel has been sharing photos and videos from the BJP’s election rallies. It is hence clear that an old video of Patel was taken out of context and shared with misleading claims ahead of the Gujarat assembly elections.
